Wi-Fi Analytics Tool is an excellent app for Android devices. It easily identifies all of the wi-fi signals that are within a reasonable range. In addition to providing the SSID of each wi-fi source it also gives pertinent information such as whether they are encrypted or open, the channel that they use, the signal strength quality of each source, etc. For the more technically minded user, the app also shows various charts and graphs for the identified signal sources and one of the bar graphs even has a pinging signal with an indicator that points to the best signal source to use. That ping becomes a bit annoying after a while but it can be easily turned off if so desired. Once the signal sources are identified, the app offers to connect you to any source that you choose (you must know the pass code of course). Wi-Fi Analytics Tool also continuously scans for available signals thus allowing the user to move about within their location to see where the signal is the strongest; a great feature if you are trying to fine tune your own wi-fi connection. In summary, I love this app and would highly recommend it.
I install wireless networks and one thing usually overlooked by the home user is the channel traffic. If you live in an area with a lot of interference such as an apartment complex, you can improve your reception by looking at the available channels and changing your wifi channel setting to one that isn't being used. This tool gives a clear graphic showing how many wifi devices are on each channel and another one showing the signal strength of your network. It doesn't tell you how to change channels, though. You'll have to look that up on your own or find a computer geek to help you.
I say that only because you have to be logged onto Amazon Apps to use the program. My tablet only has WiFi and I would rarly use this app on a public network. I work in IT an thought this would be a handy tool to have.
The app does a decent job showing what channels are being used. But the app will make recommendations of what channels to use without considering cross channel interference. That is, it is best practice to use only channels 1, 6, 11 in the b/g range (us). This is because these channels don't interfere with each other, but channels 2,3,4,5 will interfere with channels 1,6 and 7,8,9,10 will interfere with 6,11. The app gives recommended channels ignoring best practices, and there are no settings to specify that you want to app to only recommended channels 1,6,11.
While I use and like WiFi Analyzer this utility is much more up to date. It's graphical, and provides information that the others doesn't. It will give you a signal meter that provides you a sound representing the strength of your signal as well as a graph so you know if you have a strong enough signal in various areas of your house. I also like the channel interference display that tells you what's the best channel to use and eliminate Wi-Fi inteference in your home. Finally, I like that it tells you the percentage of your signal and avoids the confusion by just giving you the DBM signal numbers. This way you can walk from room to room or even outside to tell how strong your Wi-Fi signal is. Great product!
Hardware: Kindle Fire, 1st generation, running OS ver 6.3.1 I can't figure out how to determine the version of the App.
I had high expectations for this App, and it *almost* works ... which is maddening. There are 5 different options, I used portrait view: 1) WiFi Scanner After selection, no view available 2) Channel Interference After selection, it appears no signal has been read. This is the option I wanted the most, but it doesn't work. 3) Channel Graph Signal strength pops up for ~1 sec, every 10 sec or so. I can infer information, but it is difficult due to the short durations. 4) Signal Graph Screen refreshes every 12 sec or so 5) Signal Meter Unable to select a network
I've used a lot of these types of utilities, some free and some costing a few bucks. For the casual WIFI user, this thing is great; actually, it's one of the better applications out there. However, it's only as good as the wireless reception capability of your device. I'm using it on a more obscure Droid phone, so my results aren't quite as good as someone who has a droid pad or newer generation phone.
The interface is very nicely laid out, it's not cluttered as some of the other applications and it also has a certain number of options that are generally found in more sophisticated wireless tools.
I really commend Amped Wireless for developing such an amazing tool and providing it for free. Yes, it does have some advertising in it, but it's not obnoxiously overt as other applications.
Nice app for finding out more info on any WiFi Access Points in your vicinity. Low system overhead and quick download. Works great! Awesome price for this wonderful app... FREE!
This app is brilliant I've been having trouble with my internet getting disrupted by other people wifi untill I downloaded this app , it tells you what channels other people's are useing and tells you what is the best channel to use ,it also has a great signal detector so you can position your router and items in such a place where your going to get the best signal ,I highly recommend this app it has helped me loads and its free 10 out of 10 from me
Some of the tabs, when touched, simply crash the app - the app hasn't been updated in many years, and seems incompatible with the newer versions of Android (on Fire Tablet), but some of the tabs do work, and provide some useful information - though it would be fantastic if all the tabs/features worked.
But I also found that, the information you get about other WiFi devices, seems to vary depending on what WiFi channel your own device (the one running this app) is using, where one should have no effect on the other - hard to explain, try it yourself.
But I also have other equipment made by Amped (2 routers, 1 extender) and I have found they quickly stop doing updates (firmware) even with many significant bugs remaining in their products), so I am not hopeful of any up date to this app. Take it as it is, but this app has such great potential if only they would update/fix it.
