Product Description

The Amprobe AMB-3 insulation resistance tester is an analog meter that measures insulation resistance to help reduce shock hazards and downtime on electrical systems that include wires, cables, transformers, and electrical motors. A manual range selection knob allows the operator to choose Megaohms or ohms measuring ranges. A power lock keeps the lock on to perform multiple tests. The unit measures voltage from 0 to 600V alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) and insulation resistance from 0 to 1,000 megaohms using a 500V DC test voltage. The tester automatically discharges capacitance after use so that the test leads may safely be removed from the device. Test leads and a carrying case are included. The tester is powered by four AA batteries (included). The AMB-3 is designed for use by electricians and electrical contractors.

Electrical test meters report electrical circuit properties, such as voltage, resistance, capacitance, and continuity. Available in handheld or benchtop form, they detect electrical problems in equipment, wiring, and power supplies. A variety of probes, clamps, and leads can be used to connect the meter to a circuit or device. Single-function meters, such as battery testers and voltage testers, measure one property of a circuit, and multimeters measure multiple properties. Electrical test meters display information either in analog form using a needle that moves on a calibrated scale, or in digital form using digits or a graphic representation on an LED screen. Meters have electrical properties that are to be measured and the anticipated range of results, and should have a rating that is higher than the maximum value of the anticipated range. An electrical test meter has multiple settings corresponding to potential ranges of values for the properties it can measure. A manual ranging meter requires the operator to flip through different settings until the correct range is reached. An autoranging meter cycles through range settings automatically until it reaches the correct range.

The meter I received was poorly calibrated, with errors ranging from 40% to 50% on 1M to 10M ohm test resistors. Perhaps the calibration step was overlooked at the factory. Amprobe customer service was friendly and fast, but was unable to provide a calibration procedure for this particular meter. I assume I could send the *brand new* unit back for calibration, but that's rather disappointing value from a company such as Amprobe. So although the unit can be calibrated, I clearly could not calibrate it myself.

Growing frustrated, I opened the meter enclosure (one screw - the same procedure as accessing the batteries) and noted four adjustment pots. I found that one of them adjusted the output voltage, which I set to read 450V with a DVM (although this reading is probably not accurate due to the DVM load). I then fiddled with the other 3 pots to achieve a calibration suitable for my test purposes, with decent readings from 1M to 10M. Any readings higher than that don't matter for most of my work.

I am satisfied with the build quality and general utility of the device. However, I cannot recommend it based on the poor calibration on delivery, and the lack of user-calibration procedures. Providing a simple procedure (as used at the factory) would easily resolve this issue, but Amprobe does not seem interested in this seemingly simple fix.

I've used Amprobe tools for many years with good results. In order to determine what has caused motor failures on submersible pumps (and above ground motors as well) one has to have good dependable testing equipment. My old reliable analog ohm meter finally gave up the ghost after 40 years and I needed a replacement ohm meter in a hurry. This unit showed up in a couple of days and performs well (analog units have more reliable functions than digital units in my line of work).
As mentioned in previous reviews, this is a good unit at an affordable price.

I had a 25 HP motor tripping a ground fault on a new frequency drive, the megger's first reading was 5 meg's , after removing the motor wiring cover, I found a wire had chaffed through and was causing a ground fault when the motor loaded up, after repairing the wire, the motor megged out at 800 Meg ohms. For applications under 230 volts, this analog megger performed flawlessly.

This is probably the cheapest megohmeter (not "megger" since that's a trademark) that is on the market. It works up to 500v, which is okay for 480V equipment. It is NOT UL listed (at least MINE isn't) nor is it CAT rated. But it will do the job and it is cheap.
