Editorial Reviews

One of the most celebrated musicians in jazz, Miles Davis left behind an incomparable legacy that has stood out through the years both for its prolific output and sublime musicality. With a discography boasting over 280 sessions, it is little wonder that several of his recordings have slipped under the radar. Nowhere is this more evident than with the live concert recorded in Amsterdam on December 8, 1957 with Barney Wilen and the Renee Urtreger quartet. The session was little more than an afterthought for Davis who had just finished scoring the music for Louis Malle's film Ascenseur pour l'Echafoud (released in the United States as Frantic). The house band of Paris's legendary Club St. Germain, the quartet was already a cohesive unit prior to Davis's arrival. Miles himself was already well familiar with the other musicians, most notably with American expatriate Kenny Clarke.
