While it is true that one of the key themes of the movie is the 2d Amendment protections that are afforded to all other aspects of our Constitutional government, it occupies only the last 10-15 minutes of the entire movie.
Much of the movie is devoted to several other themes that were as important in 1946 as they are today. This involved reintegration of veterans back into a society that largely misunderstood what the veterans had to do to win the war. It also covers the time honored tradition of never leaving a Soldier behind. One truism that comes to light is that the friendships and loyalties that are gained in war are meant to last a lifetime.
This concept gets put to the test repeatedly in the movie. The first time involved when Jesse Meadows (Tom Sizemore) made his political debate with Tom Cantrell (G.W. Bailey) in the town square. Cantrell knew that Meadows was a wounded veteran and had received head injuries that prevented him from fully articulating his ideas. Cantrell sought to exploit this and mock Meadows in front of the town citizens. When it was apparent that Meadows was not working from a full deck and was being humiliated by Cantrell, it was at that point that George Meade (Brad Johnson) was shamed into recovering his comrade Jesse meadows and he pulled him from the podium. It was a defining moment in the film for Meade and it was then that he knew he would have to run for mayor.
The other instance about war friendships involved Juan Medina. George Meade took the lead of his father who addressed the political reality that his ticket would not get elected with a "Mexican" on the ticket.Read more ›
"An armed man is a citizen. A disarmed man is a subject."
I first became aware of the movie and the story by way of an email that was forwarded to me. It had a YouTube clip which I watched and was touched. With a little research I discovered the movie was still available directly from Hallmark and ordered it on line. We watched it last night and were both deeply moved by the movie and its message. In retrospect I'm still amazed that I had not heard anything about this event as a boy in Houston, Texas. I would have thought something that significant would have become a part of the history books on this country.
There are a number of interesting special features which tell about the making of the movie and the cast. This is a worthwhile investment and I'm glad we have this DVD; if you love your country this one will inspire you.
I don't think you will be disappointed .
...being the Battle of Athens, Tennessee (August 1-2, 1946), in which GIs returning from World War II to McMinn County, midway between Knoxville and Chatanooga in eastern Tennessee, found their communities under the vicious control of the Cantrell political machine. The "law enforcement officers" of the county sheriff were, in fact, nothing more than badge-wearing armed goons at Cantrell's command.
This mild movie is the best available dramatization of what happened in that Summer of 1946, when American private citizens, faced with a government that would not obey the law, took up weapons - including semiautomatic military small arms, machine guns, and dynamite - and got themselves an honest election by exercising their civil rights in a manner that would cause today's "Liberals" to soil their silken panties.
Until someone undertakes a proper and accurate dramatic account of what actually happened in McMinn County when the GIs returned to their homes and did to the Cantrell machine what they'd done to the foreign enemies of freedom, this milk-and-water substitute will have to do.
