About the Author

R. Terry Malone, P.E., S.E., performs third-party structural plan reviews and presents structural-related seminars at state and local International Code Council (ICC) chapters. He was a practicing structural engineer in Tacoma, Washington for 17 years, after which he became a principal in consulting structural engineering firms in Washington and Oregon from 1985 to 2004. Mr. Malone is currently licensed as Professional Engineer in Washington, Oregon, and Arizona.

Robert W. Rice, CBO, is Building Safety Director for Josephine County, Oregon. He holds eleven Oregon/ICC certifications, including ICC Certified Building Official and has served as a Building Safety Director since 2007. Mr. Rice is on the Board of Directors of Oregon Building Officials Association, Chair of the Codes Committee, and was the 2010 Building Official of the Year.

Practical, Organized, and for those in practice

As a practicing structural engineer, this is so far the best book that i have found. It is well organized and comes from someone who has been practicing in the field. The author knows that many of our fellow engineers don't take the time to look at irregularities. This is book is written for people who best learn through doing examples. It is my experience that many books will tell you what to do in a few words. Meanwhile, this book goes through step by step examples to illustrate the concepts. It is filled with diagrams, commentary, and wisdom.

The only other books that I have worked through that compare to this book are the SEA of California design example books. Also, Terry Malone now works for Woodworks. He is a great asset that engineers can reach out to when they need help designing wood structures. All he asks back is for information about the project so that Woodworks can justify it's helpfulness.

I only hope that Terry writes more books, because this one is a winner.

The author, Terry Malone, is a tremendously dedicated and common sense type SE. I attended a seminar where he was one of the presenters. He emailed the solutions for the problems in this book, which was a great help.

I love this book. I was working with structural design/ drafting for wood framed houses for a few years, and this is the only source that explained me very well behavior of wood framed floor diaphragms and shearwalls in real life irregularly shaped buildings..

I wish I had a book like this a long time ago. A book like this is crucial for any structural engineer who designs timber-framed buildings. This book goes into great detail regarding macro- and micro-analysis and detailing of timber-framed lateral force resistance systems

The title is very misleading and do not represent the content of the book.

Book its not about Irregular shaped structures (i was pleasantly surprised when i saw the title), but about irregular wooden diaphragms and wooden shear walls.Its a big difference..what makes this book just partly useful.The correct title should be: The analysis of irregulary shaped wooden buildings.
