She wants to be respected by the "sexy six" a group of men composed of those with real life combat training and some nearly old enough to be her grandfather so how does she gain that respect? By ditching her bodyguards when at any time she could be taken and killed for her magic unicorn blood and taking all kinds of risks that are unacceptable - see entering secret Hive room with Jayden to read forbidden files at the risk of immediate discovery and torture AFTER being told not to use her keycard recklessly. I could go on but its not necessary. Charlie is not a very well written or mature character despite that she is likable however I have a hard time seeing the other sexy six letting her take charge of an outing which she did or seeing Ryder falling in love with her particular brand of brash and reckless immaturity.
Add to this her supposed best friend Tessa essentially ends up being written into a grave of betrayal and disloyalty as she forgoes the old saying "bros before hoes" for her new love and her entree into the elite world of vampirism. Even when the writers tried to bail her out at the end it felt forced and did not at all redeem her infantile and surprising behavior for someone who was supposed to not be able to live without her friend by her side. I was shocked as I read it. Now let's leave aside Tessa and also address the rushed and somewhat forced romantic confession Ryder delivers to Charlie after her full disclosure of her history. It was rushed and it was sloppy after the slow buildup in book one it left me disappointed though I felt the rest of their relationship development was fine.
Overall this book is passable however if you are looking for a heroine or mature writing like that of Jane Yellowrock's Skinwalker Series by Faith Hunter or Kate Daniels of the Magic Strikes series by Illona Andrews (who have perfectly worked out two writers balancing a character and world development) or even the wacky escapades of Rachel Morgan from the Hollows Series by Kim Harrison you will be sorely disappointed. It felt like I was reading an adult novel written at the level of a 16 year old. It's a let down too since I found the variation on this world of vampirism had so much more potential than what it was written as.
That being said, I have to say that doing the things Charlie does and being as headstrong as she is causes the conflict that keeps a story moving along. And trust me...between the vampires, the Ash and the humans, there was plenty of conflict to keep the story going. And, as we move forward in the novel, we see some of the reasoning behind the things she insists on doing. I look forward to seeing where the author takes this group next.
“I’m a killing machine, bitch” -Jayden
OMG! This book is just awesome! I forgot how much I absolutely love Charlie, Jayden, and the sexy six. I love this book so much because I can connect to Charlie because the two of us have the same personality. And what I would give to have Jayden as my BFF or, as Charlie says, BAFF. Also, Charlie and Ryder, talk about a couple who were made for one another. And Ryder finally got the courage to take his and Charlie’s relationship to the next level. I’m not going to say which level that was, that for y’all to find out.
Now, let’s actually discuss the book and not my fangirling over these magnificent characters. I love how Charlie is growing and developing throughout this book. She has come to the conclusion that she can’t just sit back anymore and allow the vampires to do as they please. What they did was truly unthinkable. Evil bastards. The twist and turns of this book is absolutely amazing and kept me glued to my screen for hours on end. I literally didn’t stop my reading unless I was forced away from my computer. And I get bored easily, so that’s saying something. Now, Sam, that man and his secrets. I can’t wait for the next book because Sam has a LOT of explaining to do. I was disappointed in Tessa, but she redeemed herself by the end of the book. And why can’t I have some sexy six in my life? It’s just not fair. Haha
In all honesty, this book has been one of the best ones I’ve read this summer. I will defiantly be following these authors for the next book in the trilogy. If you all are looking for a book with a kickass female lead who will make you constantly laugh throughout this book, then this book is for you. You will without a doubt fall in love with all the characters in this trilogy. It’s such an amazing take on vampires, you all will love it. Now, why are you still here? Go and get this book and fall in love.

The sexy six and jayden are Charlie's family now. A little girl is turned by a vampire and Charlie swears she will help. Charlie's blood holds a secret, and all hell will break loose if it is revealed.
This is a good series. I will continue to read....have to get to the end.
Read on my friends.
