If you’re trying to figure out what I could use to store my cat food, I stumbled onto these wonderful huge jars. And I mean huge. They are perfect for dry foods especially for any pet owners that want to keep their kibble in a safe environment that also will keep things fresh but don’t have any bad chemicals or leaching of plastics. These bad boys are also incredibly good looking and the stainless tops are lovely. Two quick things; the lids are not screw ones you just pick them up… I was a little confused as I thought they would be screwed ones but they have some type of vacuum apparatus where you just open and close it and it shuts down the air. And, these guys are incredibly heavy. So if you don’t like or don’t want to have to navigate heavy heavy jars, these may not be for you. I actually love the heft of the jars as they are very solidly made but I can see if you were going to be using them daily it may be a pain if you need to lift them up and down. I just use a stainless steel scoop for each jar that I have for each type of cat food and leave the jars in my pantry and just open them up and scoop out what I need so I don’t have to pick them up. But they are very very well-made and a perfect addition for what I need for the cat food. Highly recommended.

Let me say first- Love the industrial/‘physicians sundry jar’ look of this container.

I bought it to hold a large wet specimen because the heading said ‘air tight’ and the look is spot on. However…There are two small vent holes in the gasket, and the sticker in the lid specifically says dry storage only. I wish that had been stated in the listing.

All that said, it’s really a gorgeous heavy (affordable) jar, & looks fabulous in the kitchen filled with flour. If you’re looking for really big dry storage jars for farmhouse/industrial, this is perfect. Would look amazing filled with beach finds, rocks, or even pool balls/gears/books/feathers, etc. Endless possibility. Plenty of room for decently sized (dust free!) vignettes.

I don't need the lid so I have no opinion on the air tightness of the container. I am using it to brew kombucha. I have had issues with glass breaking in my past (bartender by trade) so I have taken precautions to prevent an accident. First of all I do not put boiling water in anything that is not tempered. I clean the vessel with Dawn dish soap and rinse very thoroughly and then spray the interior with %6 cleaning vinegar and let it sit. I'll then rinse the container with warm tap water (not hot) and spray the inside with distilled white vinegar (food grade) and let sit for a few minutes. Not only will the vinegar disinfect the container but it will not hurt the kombucha. If you are concerned about bacteria you could do fill the container up with warm water and a cap full of bleach and let sit for a few hours as a step before washing with soap (note that dish soaps often contain ammonia and will react with bleach that is still in container).
Most of us stand to introduce more contamination through our sponges and brushes than we are removing from them. Unless you have reason to believe that there has been contamination introduced to your vessel I would be as delicate as possible.

I am going to be using this for a shrimp jararium. It's a great size- definitely 2.5gal as advertised. The lid appears to be air tight for those that need it and it's a good price. I am giving 3 stars because the glass has many imperfections. As you can see in the pictures it looks wavy and unclear. If you are using it for a purpose where you need to clearly be able to see what's inside I would be wary. Otherwise great purchase
