Interesting but frustrating

I found this book to be, at turns, both interesting, clever, and creative, but also in serious need of a good editor to rid it of amateurish dialogue, excessive yackety-yack, and cheap twists that seemed more pulled out of thin air than well-thought-out. I studied anthropology and have loved prehistoric fiction for many years. The notion of Homo habilis creatures somehow surviving into the 20th century is intriguing, even if highly improbable, and the first part of the book works pretty well. But, it's downhill after that. Seems to me Bishop could have expanded on the earlier parts of the story and skipped the bizarre last third of the book. Books that start off well and then go downhill quickly are just a drag. I guess I would say that this book was barely worth the time I spent reading it. Oh, and the world's reaction to finding out there was a habiline living in the 20th century was pretty poorly executed.

I'm only three quarters through this book, but it's one of the best I've ever read. Ever. Without giving too much away, it's a tale of what might happen if a proto human species (Homo Habalis, thought to be extinct 15 million years earlier) ended up in a pecan grove in southern Georgia in the 1980s. Bishop's writing is believable, deeply thought-provoking, and incredibly funny. If you want a read that has everything going for it; that will stimulate your intellect and make you laugh and cry at the same time: this is it.

Ancient of Days - Michael Bishop (Science Fiction - 09-25-2020 - review 0885)

The novel "Ancient of Days" by Michael Bishop, first published in 1985, is his seventh of thirteen he has written and has had published as of 2020. I have read five of his novels now and each one is a challenge, a rewarding challenge I may add, to complete.
Restaurant owner Paul Loyd finds his ex-wife, a professional artist, living with an apeman who eventually develops a serious interest in religion. Various elements of contemporary Southern society are infuriated by this development. The Ku Klux Klan, a popular televangelist and professional anthropologists want to take matters into their own hands and resolve this conundrum. Meanwhile Loyd's ex marries the apeman, become pregnant, has a child who eventually will be kidnapped. If that doesn't motivate you to read this book well...
Actually I found this book thoughtful and serious and dare I say it profound about the human condition. At times I could not put it down, at others I let it marinate in my mind for a few days, it's one of those kind of books.
I will admit Bishop is an acquired taste one that I would recommend you try. I find his novels like a many layered onion that you have to keep peeling to the end.
