I read this book as part of my research for my One Verse Podcast, in which we are currently studying through the opening chapters of Genesis. Niehaus has some interesting insights into the role of the temple and the priesthood in the Ancient Near East, and this helps us understand the role of the Garden and Adam in Genesis 2.

Admitting I am a geek about certain things is a necessity up front. When given the opportunity, I thoroughly enjoy pouring over varying ancient religions, looking for comparisons with Christianity and deviations as well. So while the title may be off putting, excitement bubbled up in me like the waters of the deep when Ancient Near Eastern Themes in Biblical Theology arrived on my doorstep. The chance to expand my understanding of the Ancient Near East, particularly in light of religious texts and concepts? What is not to love?

I wasn't overly familiar with Jeffrey Niehaus before this book, doing most of my exploring under the guides John Walton and Alexander Heidel. But I had encountered his name in a few articles and looked forward to his two cents on the matter. His book is laid out in a particular fashion, that I sometimes found distracting, unfortunately. His premise, however, I think is sound. Niehaus essentially asserts that most ANE religious texts follow a particular outline, as seen here (30): god --> king/prophet --> warfare --> covenant --> city/temple.

His primary argument is that this process occurs in numerous ANE texts, including the Bible. In fact, he suggests that this is inherent in the entire Biblical narrative, and that the ANE texts illustrate a fallen example of how this concept played out in the pagan world (32, 177-181). With this in mind, Niehaus structures each chapter around a single concept (Chapter 2, "God and the Royal Shepherd"), and then unpacks how each of the major cultures explored this idea. Throughout, he maintains his thesis, and constantly reminds the reader how God was the real fulfillment of each part of the ANE process.

Admitting I am a geek about certain things is a necessity up front.

Ancient Near Eastern Themes in Biblical Theology by Jeffrey J. Niehaus is not a book that most people are going to just pick up and flip through. However, despite the fact that it is filled with quotations from ancient original resources and it deals with highly technical issues, it is quite an interesting book.

In this title Neihaus essentially accomplishes two purposes. First, he points out the common elements that ancient near eastern (ANE) pagan religions have with biblical religion. In my opinion, this was the most valuable aspect of the book. Neihaus copiously details a number of examples of ancient pagan religions paralleling biblical concepts. Neihaus does an excellent job of interacting with original sources, and yet making it accessible to guys like myself who are not Egyptologists.

The second aspect of this book, that was interesting but less helpful, was Neihaus' explanation for why there are so many parallels between the pagan religions of the ANE and the bible. Neihaus' explanation can be summarized in two parts:

1. Men were created in God's image, thus the pagan religions reflect a distortion of the truth in which some elements of truth can still be found.
2. The activity of deceiving spirits (i.e. Demons) were responsible for taking elements of true religion and twisting them so that, at lest in part, they would get praise for themselves.

As I attempted to interact with Neihaus' theories a number of holes seemed to arise. Most of these holes are pointed out in a detailed manner in a recent edition of Themelios ([...] But to summarize it myself, Neihaus seems to push his point too far. At times he uses some examples that stretch the imagination to prove the existence of parallel structures.
