About the Author
Animal magnetism and intrigue...where the heroes bring the heatand the heroines save the day. As a paranormal romance writer, KiraShayde explores somewhat atypical pairings and settings and can't helpadding a twinge of societal awareness to her works, but the focus isalways on the developing romance, passion, and happy endings. While some of her books are erotic romances, you won't find any hard-core BDSM.Kira prefers the hero and heroine to share the power and share the love. On a personal level, Kira is devoted to animal and ecologicalconservation, and devil's food cake.

Getting immersed into a world of werelions and sinister Followers hunting them was definitely a refreshing change from the usual werewolves/shapeshifters plot that usually dominates the genre. Memorable characters, fast-moving plot and some steamy romance made “Ancient Heat” such a pleasure to read. Definitely recommended to all fans of the genre.
Nicole wakes up in the body of the beautiful shape shifter Marseille’s body, a situation that is terrifying and at the same time enviable, especially since Marseille is promised to the handsome Sander. I think she handles herself as well as any intelligent woman would who finds herself in heat and engaged to a drop-dead gorgeous werelion who thinks himself better than her in every way. Sander has a lot to learn and Nicole proves herself more than capable of educating him in and out of bed, as their romance grows from embittered animal attraction to real passion.
There is one gratuitous yoga scene, but that’s a good thing, because it turns into a riot of a sex scene. The book ends as a bit of a cliffhanger, but that’s a good thing too, because it means we will learn more about this clan of lion shifters and their battles with other ancient shifter clans.
The story takes you on a journey that unravels the mystery of what happened to Nicole—a very human woman—and why. Bits of mythology, prejudice and troubled relationships are drizzled in. Nicole’s true character shines through in the way she handles the upheaval which will make you root for her.
Maybe it's because werelions don't have Alphas, but they do have the concept of mates and mating, that I liked Sander. Nicole wakes up in a body that is not hers. The body she wakes up in is not even human, it belongs to a female werelion, Sander's intended mate. Sander notices the difference right away. While he does have sex with her while her body is in heat and a few times after that, he never views that body as "his property", even though it's technically his intended mate. Even after he finds out Nicole has bonded to him the first time they have sex, he refuses to officially mate with her in lion form just because she isn't his intended mate. Basically, he wasn't going around lifting his leg on things trying to mark his territory like I see sometimes and infuriates me.
Nicole and Sander both struggle through this book with their relationship. Nicole is struggling with being in a totally different body and being isolated from everything she knows. Marseille, the body she is in has taken over her body and life and her boyfriend doesn't even notice. I've read some reviews that some readers found Nicole whiny, but I found it an accurate portrayal of the situation she was in and how someone might react with everything that was thrown at her.
Sander had his own struggle. His intended took off on him. Not just left, but switched bodies. He's trying to avoid his feelings for Nicole because his family has prejudices against humans, that he also has to come to terms with.
If the struggles of that relationship is not enough tension for you, Nicole also has to find out why she was put into that body in the first place and there are ancient, telekenetic warriors attacking the werelions that are very interested in Nicole.
There was a lot of plot packed into the a little over 300 some off pages, but the author handled it well and the story wrapped up nicely
