Format: Leather Bound
My particular book, issued by the Metropolitan Museum in 1966 and distributed by New York Graphic Society in a limited edition of 500 numbered and machine-signed copies. It is not, strictly speaking, leather-bound but is "half-bound" in leather with a very interesting woven cloth remainder all of which comes in a slipcase.
The total number of hardbound copies was 12,500. I am presuming that the only difference between mine and the balance of the edition is the machine numbering/signature, but unsure on this point
The book occurs in approx. 145 (11.5" x 8.875") lavishly illustrated pages, most of which are black and white but also perhaps as many as a half-dozen tipped in color plates. The reprographics are excellent. In fact, they are what make the book, along with the preposterously enchanting objects presented to us.
The text does leave a tiny bit to be desired. It is light on narrative detail and seems to presume a grounding in ancient Peruvian civilzations/archaeology. As I have none, I didn't find myself engaged by the author's observations. Actually the objects are so unbelievably rich that one doesn't wish for more, unless it is more objects.
In fact, the objects appear so modern to the modern eye that I found myself questioning whether these were modern inventions masquerading as ancient relics.
Anyone with a grounding in graphic illustrations will be immediately familiar with some of these designs, and anybody who likes the art work of Keith Haring will absolutely love this book, and maybe love Haring's obvious appropriations a little less.
This is the kind of book that is likely to do at least two things: 1) Provide a reader with an adequate representation of Ancient Peruvian ceramics; 2) Compel a novice to look for more books on the topic.
In other words, this book alone can stand in as a quick and handy reference or chap book upon the subject, and it is that good that it causes one to want more.
