It does require a bit of an investment in time, but those of us that read this type of book are always looking for an exceptional quality serial to get lost in, with engaging Characters, a strong Military and Political scene, some awesome technology and starships, and of course, a bit of decent action.
With an Alcoholic, PTSD suffering Captain, who is also one of the best Starship Captains in the RIM as the Main Character, this series was always going to be interesting. Add a species of psykers, who can read minds and see the future, Royalty, with a power hungry Baroness and her step-Daughter, the Lady St August, as well as an old fashioned Duke and several other Alien and Human races such as the Caliphate (who have their own type of Royalty), and this is a book full of fascinating characters.
This book sees our Captain having just left the RIM Navy and joining the Barony Navy to Captain his new ship. On its shakedown cruise, he is asked by the Lady to visit a planet, and on doing so, some strange things happen, things that will not only have a huge impact on his new career, but will impact the Barony, and the entire RIM.
This book was a little slower than the first 3 in its action, but that it spent more time covering the Characters, and the Political situation on the RIM. We also got to see a lot more of the Barony this time, which made for some fascinating reading. Rudnick opened up the Barony Navy, and we got to see it through Tanner’s eyes as he explored and described his new surroundings. It is very cleverly written, allowing Rudnick to tell us about these things, but giving us a main character as the narrator, but all within the story. This story also explored the Lady St August a lot more which everyone has been waiting for.
Without trying to give away any spoilers, there was also the introduction of the Shipbuilders in this book, and Captain Scott’s new ship, the Supra Destroyer is also introduced.
This is a great continuation to the series, I have already started book 5, and I have the rest of the series.
Carry on Jim !
OK. You have hit a lot of points that I love to see in sci-fi books. Star travel, spacecraft (new & old) new tech, fresh discoveries, political intrigue, aliens, you stayed in the milky way but took it out to the rim with hints of "out there and beyond" stuff, oh yeah, the hussy and the step-daughter with some piracy thrown in.. Hmmmm, let me think, gardening and a penitentiary. Wow. Then there's the captain. As much as I want you to fix him, not sure you should .......yet. Definitely have to build on the anti grav thing, but don't let the baroness screw him over too badly. I guess he might not see it that way since he got the ship though. I'm guessing next your going to go all archeological dig on us, at least I hope you do. I bet those guys might be able to translate the message from the trees? Should the Ikarians be the translators? Do we know where they came from yet? I don't think so. So much suspense, so little time. Get on the stick! I need that next book!
I very much hope you read this author's books. Do start with the first book, Pirates, because it is the first introduction to the characters, especially the main one and you will need that to begin to understand him. Personally, I am just finishing this 4th book, and already impatient to see the next one in the series which is not out yet.
