Anders Petersen, who has been working in Sweden since the late 1960s, always finds an odd, intimate moment. He steals them--from lovers strolling the night streets, inmates in Swedish prisons, patrons in a Hamburg bar--and discloses their often uncomfortable details with a probing, somewhat detached eye. Peterson's work is central to the history of Swedish photography. No one else has made a stronger impact on the current generation of photographers. His first book, Café Lehmitz (1967-70), which features pictures from the eponymous bar in Hamburg, was published in Germany in 1978 and in France the following year. One of its images, "Lily and Rose," which depicts a sleepy, bare-chested man embraced by a rather large, laughing woman, was used on the cover of Tom Waits' 1985 album, Rain Dogs. Waits' slightly deranged narratives and Anders' image compliment each other perfectly.

About the Author

Anders Petersen has been involved in Swedish photography since the late 60s. He is one of its central figures, and no one else has made a stronger impact on the younger generation. Petersen's first book, Café Lehmitz, with pictures from a bar in Hamburg, was published in Germany in 1978 and in France the following year. Since then he has published a further 22 books.

vital photos-great book design

There are some vital photos in the three large soft cover booklets that complete this book. Many of them have already been published in other Petersen books, but here the printing is better. The images are not so contrasty as in his other recent publications of contemporary works and the sizes of the images are much larger, printed on matt paper. The layout is great, typical of his work. Jacob Aue Sobol must step of his work if he wants to match Anders Petersen!
Petersen is the real thing.

Building on the tradition of the urban street photographers William Klein and Daido Moriyama, Anders Petersen book "City Diary" is at once terrifying and sublime. The printing and design of this three volume book is exquisite. The sequencing of this book is lively and spellbinding; I couldn't put it down when I first saw it. If you like unlikely pairings of photographs, grit, and the obsurd this book is brilliant.
