The books introduce the heroine, Andi Carter, who is a nine year old growing up in the 1800s, and the first story begins with her 9th birthday and her horse named, Taffy. She is excited to finally get a chance to become a horse-and-rider pair at last, but it falls through. Amidst all of this, she meets a new friend named Sadie and their new-found friendship experiences trials and the book explores how the two young girls navigate those early experiences. The second book, introduces Andi’s experience with the circus and how she meets a boy named Henry Jackson who works in the circus selling treats. At first, Andi thinks he has the coolest job in the world, but as they spend more time together, she finds out that Henry ran away from home and is now trapped with the circus. This book reveals how Andi tries to help him and how to keep their friendship.
This book series is written for children ages 7-10 and is classified as historical fiction. Knowing that, I read the books with some younger friends in mine, and find that it is an enjoyable read, especially for those who are excited to start reading on their own. The books contain some illustrations for the young readers and also a page wherein new words and definitions are introduced. In the end of each story, there is a short historical section wherein a part of the character’s history is discussed. All in all, I think there are fun books to read (for children) but it is also perfect for a parent to read a book to their young kids in chapters at nighttime. The covers themselves are catchy, the text very readable. Also, as a plus, these books can join your kids as they grow older as another series for ages 9-13 also exists.

and competent young people. Mrs. Carter is also a caring mother who runs her business and her family on Biblical principles.
The Stepping Stones books I had the opportunity to review are geared for 7-10 year old readers. In the first book, Andi Saddles Up, the book opens on Andi's 9th birthday. Andi (as she typically goes by), has been dying to take her horse Taffy out on her own. With three older brothers "watching out for her" she feels as though she has no freedom. She's hoping that being 9 will usher in more independence! Andi soon learns that she still needs her family to help her get out of a scrape or two.
What I love about the Andi books is that readers will identify with her thoughts and feelings and while she often makes mistakes, her family helps guide her through each misstep. The books are a wonderful glimpse at how a Christian family faces challenges through prayer and Biblical wisdom.
Marlow has a fabulous website devoted to the series. You can read a sample of the books, find coloring pages and activity pages. If you want to go further into historical depth, you can also purchase an accompanying lapbook. Honestly it's one of the best book sites I've come across. The series can grow with your child with books at a variety of reading levels. Check out all the books in the series at Circle C Adventures.
Disclaimer: I received copies of Andi Saddles Up and Andi Under the Big Top from Kregel Publications for the purpose of review. No other compensation was received.
Circle C Stepping Stones #1
By Susan K. Marlow
Andrea "Andi" Carter is turning 9 years old and her filly Taffy is turning 3! Andi is beside herself anticipating the riding she'll finally get to do with Taffy. And her number 1 hoped for birthday gift is her very own saddle. And Andi has big plans - including trick riding on Taffy.
Unfortunately, (as anyone who has read any of the other series featuring Andi Carter knows) her brother Chad forbids her attempting any such tricks on Taffy or any horse. But meeting a new girl just about her age takes Andi's mind off her disappointment. Sadie is the perfect new friend and she's willing to share her secret to catching fish with Andi.
But just when everything seems perfect it all starts to fall apart because of a land dispute between Chad and Sadie's pa - Vince Hollister. Will a fight between grown-ups destroy Andi's friendship?
This is the first book in the Circle C Stepping Stones series and it is geared towards younger readers who are just starting out in chapter books. Before the reader starts the story there are a couple pages of new words that the reader may be unfamiliar with along with a brief description. After the story ends a brief historical summary about sheep and cattle wars is given.
This book is 104 pages and would be a good fit for a historical fiction book report. There are 6 illustrations throughout the book that add a little something to the reading experience. Perfect for the home or school library and a fun addition to history class.
I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
