Basically it reads as an embellished series of newspaper articles and related facts. And that would be perfectly acceptable if nor for the near complete lack of formal source citations in the form of footnotes, end notes or even a bibliography.
If you read the book, you will definitely learn more about Rube Foster, Frank Leland, the evolution of the Chicago American/Leland Giants and the complexities of business and race in the sport at the time. There is material here for a tremendous book about several subjects revolving around Rube Foster, but it just doesn't hold together as a "good read." And I guarantee you, within the first 10 pages, you will grow weary of reading the phrase "Freedom's Fields" over and over.
