I am giving this the full monty (5 stars) simply on the basis of one card: Jackson Howard. Drawing two cards with a click and shuffling three cards into R&D from Archives is such a powerful ability it is nuts. NBN also got a great agenda, Character Assassination, as well as a double operation, Invasion of Privacy. Haas-Bioroid’s new agenda, Project Ares, is matched up with a code gate piece of ICE, NEXT Bronze. Jinteki also gets a piece of ICE, Himitsu-Bako, as well as a double operation called Celebrity Gift. Weyland Consortium gets Swarm, as well as a new agenda called Geothermal Fracking. Cyberdex Trial and an illicit piece of ICE called Grim round out the corp cards.
Over on the ‘runner side of things, John Masanori is a cool neutral connection. Shaper adds False Echo, Lockpick, and Motivation, and Criminal picks up Gorman Drip v1 and a great double event called Hostage. And hey, are you ready for the Caissa suite? Anarch gets both Pawn and Rook in Opening Moves, as well as Frame Job, a double event that, well, we just won’t talk about. Overall, you need this data pack because you will be using Jackson Howard in almost any corp deck you build. Hostage is pretty valuable too.
*Celebrity Gift (3.5) Some might think I am underrating this a little bit. But to be frank it is a double edged sword. Yes it nets you 7 credits for 2 clicks. But it also makes you reveal your hand. Which for Jinteki can be a little awkward sometimes. Still a great card though.
*Character Assassination (3) Another good agenda. Can be nice to blow something up on the runner side. Issue is in NBN it really has to fight for a spot because they have so many good agendas!
*Cyberdex Trial (2) I actually like this card pretty good. Issue is, it’s hard to justify taking up a card slot when your opponent might not be running hardly any or even no virus programs.
*False Echo (2.5) Not really a terrible card. It does force hard choices out of the corp. But it’s a little wonky to be super useful.
*Frame Job (1) I don’t care if you are playing a Blackmail deck, this card still sucks. The only use I can think of is if you take a Shi.Kyu. And that’s why it gets a 1 not a zero.
*Geothermal Fracking (4.5) I like everything about this card. Literally. The card rocks. 2 free Hostile Takeovers? Yes please! The art is great and fracking (extracting oil and other things from rock) is perfectly themed to Weyland. They are using it to cause earthquakes too. Just a great card all around.
*Gorman Drip v1 (3.5) Another good card. Once the corp gets out Jackson Howard or tons of money, then it stops being as useful. But it can do some good punishment. Especially in a noise deck.
*Grim (3) This ice can really snipe programs on the runner. Only downside is the bad pub.
*Himitsu-Bako (3.5) Great ice! Fairly priced and you can kill their Knight straight up.
*Hostage (4) Connection decks became a thing with this addition. It’s nice to get your Kati, Mr. Li, Helpful AI, etc. Hands down a great card!
*Invasion of Privacy (2) It’s not terrible. Not great either. Most people won’t work it.
*Jackson Howard (5) The man. The myth. The legend. This card is single handedly the most important corp card to date. It was made to fix issues and they gave it a 1 influence cost so it would. This pack is 100% essential to playing Netrunner. I’m not exaggerating. If you ever only buy one data pack, this is it because of this card. There is nothing this card can’t do. Draw past R&D lock. Help with agenda flood. Play a shell game with. Tax the runner 3 credits. It is amazing. Hands down.
*John Masanori (3) Some people say this resource isn’t great. If you are winning he makes you “win more” but doesn’t help if you are losing. I think he’s fine. He can help with your draw.
*Lockpick (3) It’s fine. You can take or leave this card.
*Motivation (1.5) This card just isn’t there yet. It’s cool and all. But not worth taking up a deck slot for not much payoff.
*NEXT Bronze (4.5) I really love my NEXT ice. I heard a lot of rumors that there was no way they could make another set of NEXT ice because it would be too powerful. Upstalk Data Pack has proved this wrong and NEXT will just get better and better.
*Pawn (3) Let the Caissa game begin! Pawn is of course the weakest. I like the Caissa cards though.
*Project Ares (1) No. It just doesn’t justify a bad pub for any trashed card. Most likely the runner will throw away something of less worth. Add to it the fact that you have to protect it and over advance it. No thank you.
*Rook (3.5) Now this card is just annoying for the corp! It makes there ice pricy. A Pop-up Window for 2? And add it to Reina’s rig and it can be downright frustrating. I like it.
*Swarm (1) If you don’t spend a minimum of 9 on it, you get no effect. And a bad pub! Seems like a big investment for a card that could be Power Shutdown. I’ll pass.
Overall: You HAVE to get this! If you only ever added one extra data pack to your game, this is it. Jackson Howard is a game changer. I have more than one playset of him (for multiple corp decks) and I can say it was money well spent.
