The folks over at Big Nerd Ranch really know their stuff and, just as importantly, know how to communicate that stuff in a way that doesn't feel monotonous or boring. Programming is tedious. That's the sad simple truth. But reading an educational guide on programming shouldn't be!

Sure, this isn't what I'd recommend if your kid is looking for a good bed time story - but it's not the standard soulless affair that either expects you to already know seven other programming languages or have never heard of a computer before in your life. It's a good book. That said - there IS a prerequisite that you already at least be modestly knowledgeable in Kotlin, and as it just so happens, BNR has a book for that as well.

I read this book in the library and liked it so much that I bought a copy. It seriously reads like a novel. The examples are super clear and easy to follow. Far and away the best computer book I've ever read. These guys really know their stuff. I am about to sit down with it and read it again to follow along with my computer. I am really looking forward to it. How often can you say that?

There are six or seven example programs that the book has you write. They build upon concepts from previous examples so that you continually progress and feel like there is a connection to what you are doing throughout the book.

Absolutely recommend!

I purchased this book with previous knowledge of Android and Java but with hopes of switching to Kotlin. Obviously some issues arose.
Unsure if this is preventable but being that multiple topics are taught within making a project, there is endless room for error and little room for revisiting code without disrupting everything else.

I thought this would be the only book I'd need but alas this is not a perfect world.
This book is not awful and I guess I could salvage knowledge chapter from chapter.

The listing provided miscommunicates the product. I received a textbook requiring Kotlin NOT Java as the listing suggests. I understand the languages are very similar, but I am fresh off a java course and was hoping to use the book right away. Now, I either have to return it or learn kotlin. I am not questioning the information in the book, but if you are going to sell a product (especially if you're a company with a reputable background such as Big Nerd Ranch), the least you can do is optimize your amazon listing. Maybe correct the product description and allow the "look inside" option so I may check if the contents of the book are what I am looking for. The pictures are also in black and white. Again, I am not questioning the content of the book, if you are experienced in kotlin then feel free to use this book. If not, go with the third edition of this book that uses java or use a different one.
