Unit does NOT have an ON/OFF switch. You must unplug to power off, but it does accept Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot.
Previous reviews indicate the unit runs hot. That is NOT my case after 6+ hours of constant use.
So far so good.
After playing with the unit for a couple of days, I mounted it behind my 47" Vizio that's on the wall. My biggest concern was that this device would be running constantly 24/7 as I started to fish a power cord through the wall to supply power to the unit. Then a light bulb went off in my head. I took the supplied mini to full USB cable, plugged the mini side in the unit and the full side in my TV's USB port.
Now when my TV's is turned on the unit gets it power and boots up. When I turn the power to my TV off, the unit powers down. No need for the power supply.
I live in a older house, and I Wifi is not the greatest in the room I use it in (great for computers, but something simple like this and a Sony streamer i had before fumble a bit) And out of the box it was hooking up to my WiFi network, but not getting data. I messed around with the Wifi, annoying my roommate who was watching netflix, then settings on my MK808B, everything... then I realized it automatically says it is January 1, 1970 (okay, my husband did while hearing me swear why I couldn't figure it out "IT'S NOT 1970 YOU PIECE OF..." lol... So if you have issues with WiFi; MAKE SURE YOU UNCLICK AUTO NETWORK TIME, CHANGE DATE, THEN RECHECK THE BOX!!
After that, netflix was sketchy... only certain shows were playing, but still blocky. Moved to the other room with the router, and everything was playing, but still blocky. Pandora worked great, needed some time to think, but great. You tube worked the best oddly, as well as surfing the web and Facebook. I could stream my PC files on their OS program, but it is pretty ugly, and hard to read, so downloaded XBMC. Worked, but buffered ALOT (you have to go to their website and download, then instal since it is not in google play store.) You can also download "add-ons" like different channel streams.
Everything downloads fast, but I recommend you turn off auto update. I accidentally turned it on, and it was really frustrating while getting everything set up.
Eventually I was feeling a little Eh about it, so I flashed it with another OS firmware (Finless 1.7) To do this is not hard per say, but you have to know to work a computer pretty well. You also need to figure out if you have the original MK808B or one of two cloned versions (the cloned ones aren't bad, they are just different makers needing different roms to flash)Then you can go check out how to download and flash. Took me 30 minutes from start to finish, but 20 was because my computer was having issues recognizing the MK808B.
After flashing it was a whole new ball game!! Everything was snappier, nothing was blocky for the most part (sometimes my husband was playing games on his xbox, it would shudder for a minute on Netflix) You can download more games because it wont tell you it's not made for this device like the old OS. Then you also dont have to unplug and re plug in to turn off and on. The built in OS doesn't have a On/Off function (or if it did, I forgot to look, you wouldn't be able to turn on without unplugging and plugging in.) Flashed OS re-enabled sleep mode, so all I have to do is wiggle my mouse, and it wakes up, and at night I just turn it off with a new off button.
There are a few video formats I am not sure why it is not reading, but that is probably on my end.
In all, this is NOT the highest end streamer, but it gives WAY more options. I wouldn't recommend anyone without computer programing knowledge, and expecting a perfect system, to buy this, but someone with basic programing knowledge ,and willing to work with it, I think this is AWESOME!! I would buy this over any streamer because I LOVE to mess with stuff, and hate being stuck with a designated function. For the price you have a whole tablet for your TV, and the manufacturer is OKAY with you messing with it!! With some work, and time, you can customize to your hearts content! (Belonging to the forum where people develop these roms, and answer questions gets addicting to modifying these)
Things I haven't tried that are possible (will update when I do)
Some have flashed, then put NES or super NES programs, and played using gaming usb controlers. TOTALLY want to play super Mario right now
You can add micro SD for adding movies/music/pictures, or more Apps. But you can also use the adaptor included and hook up a external hard drive or flash drive. Thinking about that.
Other people instead of plugging into the power adaptor have plugged into a TV or gaming USB port, so when the TV, gaming system is off or on, the MK808B follows. I am going to try soon, but I have short arms, and USB port on my computer is hidden a bit. Like the idea to conserve the MK808B's life.
but the same DVI monitor that works fine with my ps3/360 in full 1080p
Dose NOT support this!
You have to buy a special box that converts the signal, The Hdmi<->DVI Cable dose NOT do this.
Overall it's a very nice device, using BubbleUPNP, with MXPlayer, I am able to Stream videos from my local media server.
I use connectbot to manage my PC via ssh, using an older version of netflix I can watch movies online,
and with Docs2Go I can edit Word/google docs files.
It supports USB hubs, both powered, and non powered. and if you have the v2 firmware you can use a USB Ethernet adapter, to increase your internet speed.
The default output is 720p, so if your monitor is 1080p, you'll have to adjust that in the display setting, but it's no big deal.
Angry Birds Space, Plants VS. Zombies, and Fruit ninja all play fine, Although I use it more as a work PC, then a gaming console, it also plays 3d game such as Minecraft PE, Dead trigger, and anomaly HD at a fairly good frame rate, but the lack of USB controller support, and touch screen prove to be an issue.
Overall it's quite good for the price, but it should be noted, that with this and many other chines Android devices, Their will be little to no support. So if it breaks, or you're having trouble with something, you're outta luck. And the sellers could be hit or miss, on shipping good products, so I's say buy from the seller with the highest rating, and hope for the best! But trust me when I say it's well worth it!
