Amazon.com Review

Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy uses a seemingly infinite array of purely natural materials, from snow and ice to leaves, stone, and twigs in the creation of his one-of-a-kind sculptures. Unlike such artists as Christo and Michael Hiezer, whose works leave definite marks on the landscape, Goldsworthy's approach is to interrupt, shape, or in some other way temporarily alter or work with nature to produce his fragile, mutable pieces. To create "Broken Icicle," for example, Goldsworthy was only able to work on the sculpture in the early morning, when temperatures were below freezing. As with most of his works, ultimately, the materials used to create this piece returned to their natural state, leaving no trace of the artwork's existence save for the stunning photos in this book.

From Library Journal

A new generation of American and European sculptors is receiving critical and commercial attention for rediscovering, in the spirit of Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel (1913), the wealth of forms in everyday life. Variously labeled "New Object," "Metaphoric Object," "Neo-Geo," or "Simulationist," this new sculpture mimics familiar objects from industrial, domestic, and historical sources. [...] Goldsworthy is an extraordinarily innovative British artist who employs a range of natural materials--leaves, bark, twigs, petals, berries, rock, clay, stones, feathers, snow, ice--to create outdoor sculpture that works instinctively in nature. His range of scale is impressive, from grasses and leaves to ice spires and slate stacks. Goldsworthy records his works in the 120 full-color photographs that are the subject of this book. The delicate tensions and balance of his collaborations encourage a sharpened perception of the natural world. Goldsworthy's introduction eloquently explains his working methods and philosophy and convinces the reader that he's doing more than playing the primitive.

This is one of my favorite books. I first saw it at a friend's house in 1995 and had to drive over 100 miles to find a bookstore which had a copy. I bought two, one for myself and another to gift to a very dear friend. Both of us still reach for the book with incredible frequency.

I think it is a magic book because I use it like a drug when I'm feeling stressed out or looking for a creative spark. I can browse through its pages quickly or I can stop and admire a single page for a long time. Goldsworthy is a visionary whose grasp of the transient quality of art and nature is unlike that of any artist I've ever seen. His natural constructions are breathtaking in the duality of their complexity and simplicity, and of the causal parallelism of natural and man-made space. There is no synchronicity here, just the beautiful illusion of it.

Thanks to the internet, I have purchased this book many, many times to give as a gift to only the people whom I have a deep connection with. I have gifted many books over the years, but this is the only one I give people that I absolutely know they look at over and over.

It's definitely one of my "trapped on a desert island" books. If I was only allowed one, this would probably be it because I would never tire of it. I've paged through it, easily, 1000+ times. I highly recommend it.

Beautiful book in Near Fine Condition (advertised as Very Good)! Delivered by USPS earlier than expected at the opening of the delivery window estimate. Carefully wrapped in paper and taped closed with attention to detail and then placed in a box with protective papers filling all the gaps to preserve pristine cover sleeve during shipping. The book of course is breathtaking, but the customer service and accurate description from Jeff Hersch Books is worth remarking on and I certainly would recommend their business heartily after this initial purchase from them!

As a Goldsworthy lover, I consider this his best all around book. It is a coffee table photo-book of Goldsworthy creations made from leaves, sticks, stones, icicles, snow and more. The photos are surprising and delightful.

I'm a nature teacher, and these books are great teaching resources; the kids get the idea immediately and spontaneously start making little Goldsworthies. They also make wonderful gifts, coffee table books, and fundraiser auction items. Every well stocked home library should have at least one Goldsworthy book, and believe it, I just found my teenager flipping through this book the other day.

Hey everybody! We have a new $2 million Goldsworthy art installation at the Saint Louis Art Museum as of June 2013!

I love Andy Goldsworthy, so when I had to find a class gift for a teacher who loves the outdoors I knew this would be a good one to choose. It covers a spectrum of his work rather than focussing on one element alone, and has a dramatic cover that has a great 'wow' factor. Well worth the investment.
