The narrative was well written and was also edited very nicely. The story did take a long time to really get going, which made the opening chapters a bit of a drag. The author could have made it more fast paced or exciting, but I also respect the fact that she was trying to keep it as close to the truth as possible. The author mentioned that she wrote several different versions of this before she finally settled on this one, which makes me interested to see what the other versions looked like to see what the changes and differences were.
Indeed, with this emotionally moving tale, the author advances the literary genre of the spiritual mystery, in which the solution of a crime relies upon seemingly supernatural intervention.
This is a most unusual tale about an unusual person. It is a story about crime but also of romance, spirituality and faith and, above all, it is a memoir that provides a spiritual catharsis for the author.
This book was so freaking entertaining. I loved every chaotic and hilarious moment of this novel. I don't want to ruin the plot, so I'll just say this book is hilarious. A story that should be most intriguing to devotees of romance and especially those who enjoy the added level of spirituality, clairvoyance or other ethereal experience.
My first thought was "Well done, Lizbeth. Excellent story."
Set in Hawaii, the story tells of a woman's courage to face the bullying of an evil and mentally unstable man, and of how she dealt with her circumstances by fighting back.
I was totally invested in the story by the second chapter. The straight forward narrative with several chicken skin scenes scattered throughout held my interest. The revelation of Vic's haunting activities, told without embellishment, rang true.
Five Stars for a well-delivered story, and for the courage to tell a story that could empower others to face their demons.
Hartz writes at one point in the book:
“And I’ll hone my writing skills until I can describe what happened so compellingly readers will clamor to read your story…. And everyone will know what a righteous dude you were, and that your spirit transcended the grave, …. I promise to get you in print, Vic, or die trying.”
In this gripping page-turner (I read it at one sitting) the ending is among the most powerful I have ever read) she has honored Vic as she promised to do so very long ago.
As a writing teacher, I read novels on two levels; the story and the technical details. I also commend Lizbeth Hartz for excellent use of detail, for bringing all the senses into the story, for a solid plot arc, and for that ending that made a tough old veteran weep.
