Excellent book for kids and young adults

The worst thing about this book is its very uninspired and uninspiring title which really does not grab the imagination at all. The story itself therefore comes as a surprise because it is well-written and will readily appeal to kids and young adults. Rather in the vein of Harry Potter, the 13 year old hero of this book seems to have been born disadvantaged – his parents are dead and he does not fit in with his peers because he is an angel born without wings. All Gabriel longs for is to go to the Holy Guild school but not having wings makes this dream seem unattainable. As with the Harry Potter series the story is full of magical derring-do as each angel has a hidden talent – a secret weapon – and they must be trained to use it. Gabriel more than proves his mettle in this exciting story set in the angel’s land of Celestia.

This is a fantasy novel that would appeal most to teens and young adults. The story follows the journey of a 13-year-old boy known as Gabriel Perez in his quest to become the ruling archangel of Celestia. But there is one problem: he does not have wings! So, he spends his time polishing wings.

But when he comes across a wanted criminal, he becomes embroiled in an abduction case and consequently sent to the holy guild for protection. Here he meets his idol archangel, Michael. He makes friends, but he has to find the truth and fight for the city against threatening evil.

Basically, the story inspires the readers to dream. Covered with adventures, you will find the story exciting and entertaining. This fantasy tale puts the message across clearly; simply put, it encourages us to avoid fear and embrace positivity. It is a very interesting read.

Growing up watching anime with themes of friendship, adventures and dreaming big, I could say this book truly captured the narrative. The cover art is modest yet somehow still conveyed what the entire book wanted to tell. The whimsical storytelling of P.S. Scott from the perspective of 13-year old Gabriel is perfect for teens and young adults.

Gabriel as a central character is a great example of a teen trying to find his true self while struggling to find his purpose in a rather unforgiving world. The circumstances he is dealt in his quest to fulfill his big dream to become a ruling archangel were beautifully told, making for a light read on a chill afternoon.

This is really the story of the underdog succeeding, making his way and triumphing over the so called bad guys. Sometimes dreams do come true, and that is what happened for Gabriel. With a sweet and simple message, this book is recommended for a light escape and positive reinforcement.

Scott opens her story with a contemporary conundrum – transportation frustrations – that allows the reader to enter her imaginary land and identify with her main character! The flavor of her tale is apparent from the first lines: ‘Being an angel without wings is a tough business. For one, you can’t fly anywhere and have to depend on the Seraphim City Mass Transit (SCMT), which is always late. “The next train will arrive at 1:30 PM,” the pre-recorded announcement says, which doesn’t fill me with much hope because the last time it arrived at 1:30 PM was well…never. I twiddle my thumbs, looking up at the sky shielding Station No. 6 of the central line. When I’m the ruling archangel of Celestia, I’ll never have t take the SCMT. “My name is Gabriel Perez, I’m thirteen years old, and my dream is to become the ruling archangel of Celestia,” I shout to nobody in particular, watching my reflection in the glass panels between civilians and the landing spots.’

With that inviting setting we are off on a ‘flight’ as young Gabriel dreams his obsession of achieving wings and joining the Holy Guild, a dream that comes true by a freak accident when he encounters a fugitive criminal who places him in danger. Gabriel is sent to Holy Guild for protection, makes friends with some other angels, yet invokes the his trainer’s anger, and meets his hero – the archangel Michael. Ever on the watch for the criminal, Gabriel faces his dream of becoming the next Ruling Angel of Celestia or accept the position of driving the threatening evil to his city.

The impact of Gabriel’s drive to discover his true self is a significant factor in this fantasy tale, and one reason why the book is so appropriate for the intended Young Adult audience. Good story and world building of Angel Land. Told from the POV of a thirteen year old with dreams perhaps out of his league. But maybe through his enthusiasm and luck things might happen to go his way. There are a few editorial bumps in the book but let’s give this first time writer a pass, and give it a try. I am looking forward to the next book!
