As some of the lower ranked reviews have already stated, the first couple of chapters have parts that may shock people - dogs get hit by cars, a dog gets hit with a wrench, a man threatens to shoot a dog. Please do not let this stop you from reading a well-told tale of love lost and love regained that ends in triumph over tragedy.
Because I live in a rural area, I know all too well that there are (worthless) people who would harm animals. I see it all too often out here in the country in "anytown" USA. So for me, the narrative in the first pages of the book was not only necessary, but painted a realistic view of the plight of many animals in the United States today. It brought to light the (possible) horrors that Angelo had to endure, to show that there was trouble at every turn and to show that Angelo needed to get home and away from the tragedies of some of the people in the book.
I especially liked how each chapter (journal entry) was about a different place that Angelo (may have) traveled and about people Angelo (may have) interacted with. By the end of the book, for me, there was so much emotion wrapped up in the story that I was relieved to see a happy ending. Also, the extras at the back of the book were an added bonus and the photos of Angelo were just beautiful.
The author's writing style is warm and inviting and pulls you in from the very beginning and keeps you turning the page to see what happens next.
This is the first book I have read from this author and can honestly say that it will not be my last. I recommend this book for dog lovers and anyone who enjoys a well-written tale with a happy ending.
Shame on me, but I usually don't read much all at once. "Angelo's Journey" broke this shameful habit spectacularly. Why?
First - because the book was written "by a Border Collie." I love these dogs very much, so it's impossible for me to skip such an item!
Second - it quickly became apparent, that the story is as intelligently designed as Border Collies are intelligent. Every chapter is a separate tale narrated by a different person who meets Angelo on his way. These are completely different people, in completely different situations, but each of them gains much from meeting him, including one whose life was saved... It makes reading very fascinating and addictive, especially since the author has shown his great ability to handle different styles, as the different characters narrate their stories.
Third - Leland Dirks - the man who has written "what Angelo has told him" - "the intermediary between Angelo and us" - is a person who loves dogs as much as I do, and he understands and sees them in a very similar way, so I just had to devour this work immediately.
Fourth - I had the good luck to be the first in Poland to own this book, which made me even more driven to read it.
I wasn't disappointed. I never expected I would be. Every expectation about this book has been fulfilled, or maybe even overfilled.Read more ›
