I just immediately liked the hero Damien a mercenary without a soul but lots of heart who is dangerous but handsome to boot. Damien had so much inner turmoil almost fittingly the perfect gothic hero too that I seriously wanted to just hug the poor man. He honestly believed that he could never be saved or that anyone could truly ever love him when he had one fault and weakness falling in love with the beauteous perfect heroine Aurora. Now for some reason she just annoyed me! Everyone loved her and she could do no wrong. On top of that she was just so impeccable in everything, just in the treatment of her people and such a do-gooder I seriously wanted to gag nobody is that angelic! I wanted her to be at least human in some of her actions or behaviors and not so immaculate that I wondered at times what did she even see in Damien? Okay sure she felt that since being related to her mean-spirited, cold, callous and heartless mother that everyone would love her if she acted the total opposite of herself but seriously how much more perfect could you get? Yeah sure in her feelings and falling for Damien that made her less perfect but everything about the woman still made me like her even less. I guess I want a bit of realism to my heroes and heroines someone that I can relate too. No it’s not saying that I don’t like reading novels about superheroes but when reading a medieval historical romance if there are going to be superheroes in it then make sure it states that somewhere.
Now it sounds as if I didn’t really like the book all that much after picking on the heroine but in actuality I really enjoyed reading the story that is the reason for the four star rating. I will probably keep it in my library can recommend it and will purchase more of her works.
I did have a couple areas that I felt the writer slipped just a little. They felt rushed and slightly out of place, but all in all, a most excellent book.
