Editorial Reviews

Multi-platinum selling, Grammy Award-winning recording artist Dave Gahan, along with musical partner Soulsavers, new album is 'Angels & Ghosts'. This is the collaborators' second album, following their critically-acclaimed 2012 release 'The Light the Dead See'. The utterly riveting album boasts nine original tracks, all written by Dave Gahan & Soulsavers.
An evolution from their first album, 'Angels & Ghosts' proves to be a markedly stronger and more hard-hitting body of work. Listeners can expect to be led through an aural mix of dark, brooding sounds, elements inspired by gospel and blues, and the stark beauty that has become a signature of Dave and Soulsavers works. Dave Gahan's emotionally powerful voice has never sounded better, and drives the album forward over a landscape of meticulously crafted instrumentation.
A transatlantic collaboration, the writing process started with Dave Gahan and Soulsavers' Rich Machin exchanging demos and ideas from their respective studios in lower Manhattan and rural England. They then recorded the album with additional musicians in studios around the world, including classic locations such as Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and Electric Lady in New York. The end result is a vibrant, live-sounding album, and proof of the "instant and obvious fit" Machin felt writing with Gahan.

“Angels and Ghosts” marks the second collaboration between Soulsavers and Dave Gahan. This comes following their 2012 album, “The Light the Dead See”, which was a very haunting and spiritual journey. I found the album fantastic. So how does “Angels and Ghosts” stand as a sophomore album?

I first have to note that the first single from “Angels and Ghosts” is the song “All of this and Nothing”. I have to say that when I first heard this track I fell in love immediately, the drums, the guitars, the strings, the back vocals and of course Gahan’s vocals. This is the first song I can honestly say I felt I have heard before. This is not to say it is a copy or a rip off, but this message and tune was like going home. I am so sorry if that comes across maudlin, but I can’t think of another way to describe this feeling. In addition, this is the first song that has ever, ever almost brought me to tears. I am really not an over emotional person, but this track is seriously one of the best songs I have heard in a long time.

Now that I am finish confessing my love for the lead single, is the rest of the album as good? I would say yes. Musically the “Angels and Ghosts” doesn’t depart too much from the sound or theme of that from “The Light the Dead See”. In other words, the album is dripping with spiritual imagery, blues, neo-gospel and flares of post-rock. The only difference is I see is as a body of work, this album isn’t quite as dark as its predecessor. Think of songs being played in the graveyard next to a church.

I would have to say that Dave Gahan sounds amazing. His voice is as sharp and strong as ever. I really get the feeling he didn’t hold back and put everything into these songs.

The collaboration between Gahan and Soulsavers really soars. It's a bit maddening to read reviews from people who want Gahan circa 1990. People grow, the world changes. I enjoyed the single, "All of This and Nothing," but, for me, the highlight of the album is "Lately," a dark, existential meditation with ominous undertones. Like the previous album, "Angels & Ghosts" is wrapped in religious imagery, loneliness, and contemplative rhythms that are as soothing as they are unsettling. I would be remiss if I did not mention that I stumbled upon Soulsavers via Mark Lanegan (Blues Funeral) which led me to "It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land." Would love to see them do a more extensive tour than NY-LA-Paris-London-Berlin (although I understand). One can hope. For now I'll have to settle for the YouTube video of their set in Los Angeles from 2012.

This is a worthy successor to Soulsavers' phenomenal album with Dave Gahan, The Light The Dead See. The spiritual searching and melancholy suit his voice, lyrics and melodies beautifully. Better produced than their work with Mark Lanegan, this album has every bit the same integrity and richness.

I assume Dave Gahan's name comes first on this album, so they will sell more copies. They deserve to, it's great work.

This CD, as with the previous recording made by Gahan and Soulsavers, suffers--albeit perhaps a bit unfairly--from comparisons to Gahan's previous work. Depeche Mode broke new ground. When I first heard DP, I knew I was hearing something new; something fresh that gave them a distinctive personality and sound. By comparison, this material is, well, just okay. Nice, safe compositions utilizing nice, safe instrumentation and nice, safe lyrics with nice, safe mixing and production. Nothing here to dislike or be disturbed by, certainly, but nothing to get excited about either. All the coloring is inside the lines, with no rules broken or even bent. While I don't dislike these recordings, I also find nothing to get excited about in them. It's a sadly ho-hum effort.

Guess it's hard to top Soulsaver, which I definitely thought was special. Similar music, more gospel like and less diverse - really, nothing new. No real progression from what he put out in Soulsaver and maybe a step back. Still, a decent listen but not something you'll come back to often.

Amazing! Fantastic! I could go on an on. I am a huge Depeche Mode fan so of course I keep current on the individual works of Dave and Martin Gore. Angels & Ghosts was so much more than I ever could have imagined. The depth of the lyrics and the soulfulness of the music sent me on a musical journey that any David Gahan fan would be happy to go on.

Many times the solo works of an artist that has spent a lifetime in a band are not overly impressive...that certainly is not the case with this album.

Dave Gahan has been a one man music making machine. In the recent past since he began releasing solo albums, he has been remarkably consistent for well over a decade, alternating releases of solo albums and Depeche Mode albums every 2 years. This new album is heavy on filler material that takes the bulk of the second half. The real heavy hitters are the at the beginning of the album. My favorites are "Shine", which continues where Delta Machine's Heaven left off, while "Tempted" and "All of this & Nothing" fight for lynchpin rights.

Tempted in particular is my highlight, Dave Gahan's voice as graceful as ever, the baritone ever present, and it has an infectious hook to it. Definitely one of Mr Gahan's most beautiful songs.

If you're a DM fan (and a Dave Gahan fan) you will buy this and enjoy it.
