An evolution from their first album, 'Angels & Ghosts' proves to be a markedly stronger and more hard-hitting body of work. Listeners can expect to be led through an aural mix of dark, brooding sounds, elements inspired by gospel and blues, and the stark beauty that has become a signature of Dave and Soulsavers works. Dave Gahan's emotionally powerful voice has never sounded better, and drives the album forward over a landscape of meticulously crafted instrumentation.
A transatlantic collaboration, the writing process started with Dave Gahan and Soulsavers' Rich Machin exchanging demos and ideas from their respective studios in lower Manhattan and rural England. They then recorded the album with additional musicians in studios around the world, including classic locations such as Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and Electric Lady in New York. The end result is a vibrant, live-sounding album, and proof of the "instant and obvious fit" Machin felt writing with Gahan.

I first have to note that the first single from “Angels and Ghosts” is the song “All of this and Nothing”. I have to say that when I first heard this track I fell in love immediately, the drums, the guitars, the strings, the back vocals and of course Gahan’s vocals. This is the first song I can honestly say I felt I have heard before. This is not to say it is a copy or a rip off, but this message and tune was like going home. I am so sorry if that comes across maudlin, but I can’t think of another way to describe this feeling. In addition, this is the first song that has ever, ever almost brought me to tears. I am really not an over emotional person, but this track is seriously one of the best songs I have heard in a long time.
Now that I am finish confessing my love for the lead single, is the rest of the album as good? I would say yes. Musically the “Angels and Ghosts” doesn’t depart too much from the sound or theme of that from “The Light the Dead See”. In other words, the album is dripping with spiritual imagery, blues, neo-gospel and flares of post-rock. The only difference is I see is as a body of work, this album isn’t quite as dark as its predecessor. Think of songs being played in the graveyard next to a church.
I would have to say that Dave Gahan sounds amazing. His voice is as sharp and strong as ever. I really get the feeling he didn’t hold back and put everything into these songs.Read more ›
I assume Dave Gahan's name comes first on this album, so they will sell more copies. They deserve to, it's great work.
Many times the solo works of an artist that has spent a lifetime in a band are not overly impressive...that certainly is not the case with this album.
Tempted in particular is my highlight, Dave Gahan's voice as graceful as ever, the baritone ever present, and it has an infectious hook to it. Definitely one of Mr Gahan's most beautiful songs.
If you're a DM fan (and a Dave Gahan fan) you will buy this and enjoy it.
