Do Angels Need Haircuts? Hardcover – April 24, 2018
by
Lou Reed
(Author),
Anne Waldman
(Foreword)
In August of 1970, a 28-year-old Lou Reed quit the Velvet Underground, moved home to Long Island, New York, and embarked on a fascinating alternate creative path: poetry. Spending months in relative isolation, the musician refashioned himself, publicly vowing to never again play rock and roll. Reed wrote verse and contributed his work to journals and small press publications. “I’m a poet,” he proclaimed from the stage of St. Mark’s Church in March 1971. Though his retirement from music wouldn’t last―only six months later he began recording his debut solo album―Reed’s passionate identification with the written word was solidified, and would last the rest of his life. Gathering poems, photographs and ephemera from this era (including previously unreleased audio of the 1971 St. Mark’s Church reading), and featuring a new foreword by Anne Waldman and an afterword by Laurie Anderson, this book provides a window to a little-known chapter in the life of one of the most singular and uncompromising voices in American popular culture.
About the Author
Lou Reed was a musician, writer and icon of underground culture. The frontman and principal songwriter of the foundationally transcendent rock and roll band the Velvet Underground and a hugely influential solo artist, Reed’s career spanned five decades. He died in 2013, leaving behind an unfathomable legacy.

Nice book of poetry by Lou Reed. Very nice book, sturdy pages, covered well, nice fonts, etc. Kind of short but lots of great photographs. Also, a nice afterword by his wife Laurie. If you’re a Lou Reed fan, I recommend you check it out.

For fans of Lou Reed, this is a great, gorgeous time capsule from that short period of time when Lou Reed was poised to be a writer/poet, no longer a rock star. He eventually returned to music, but this little poetry book showcases his literary inspirations and skill with the English language. Laurie Anderson, among other people, wrote a beautiful little prose piece about her husband here; there's also plenty of cool, rare photos from the time period. Definitely recommend this to people who like Lou Reed, his music, or just good poetry in general!

Could hardly believe it when this book arrived. A collection I never thought I’d be able to get my hands on. Eternally grateful for those who helped bring this project together. Beautiful work from one of New York’s greatest minds.

A must have for any Lou Reed fan. I’ve always admired his lyrics, and these poems provided a chance to see his versatility with writting. What a talent.

It came in good condition but thats all the good i have to say about this product

I gave it four stars just cause it came in great condition but seriously there’s only 13 “poems” in this book, all are alright, the book is mostly just pictures and more than a third of the “poetry” is just lyrics from The Murder Mystery from The Velvet Undergrounds self titled album. Only for die hard Lou Reed fans who dont really care about the content
