Very enjoyable little movie

I had never heard of this 2013 flick by Chiller so I had zero expectations for what it was. While it breaks no new ground for the genre and had a very small budget, I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was. I liked all five of the main characters, including the gay, self-described fifth wheel, Sean, who might as well have been wearing a red Star Trek shirt as "guy most likely to get killed. The two other couples were pretty realistic as both girls were ticked off by their guys' macho stubbornness and the director did a good job using that humor to help set up the horror and tension that was to follow.

I will not deny that there are a few incongruities in the story and there are a few threads that should have been clarified or even explained such as where did these mutant creatures come from, but they are only minor things I would have liked to know. I still enjoyed the film and recommend that you watch.

Good monster, no backstory

This is a good monster movie. The creature looks pretty cool. It looks like a mash of animals mixed with some sort of alien. There were both good things and some bad things about this movie.

The plot revolves around 5 friends who decide to go hiking in a forest where two of the 5, step brother and sister, grew up. A bad decision leads to their encounter with the Animal. Once we meet the Animal, it now becomes a cat and mouse game of when and how the creature will pick off the friends and their new allies, whom they meet trying to evade the creature. There were some good effects and some definite, "I didn't see that coming" moments.

A few things that could have been done better. For one, there is no explanation of what the creature is or how it became that way. Is it an animal? Is it an alien? You don't get any explanation. It hunts like a predatory animal but in no way looks like an animal you have seen before. If it is not an alien, but it is an animal, then what caused this transformation? Another thing I had an issue with, was that there was no real lead. We all know the Alpha male character is not going to be a leader. The next in line, is kind of a leader, but she never really does much for you to believe that she will be the heroine. Only one of the characters resembles a leader-type and yet he doesn't appear to make smart decisions either. Which leads me to the last point I had an issue with. Why are the majority of the male characters in this film sacrificing themselves? The guys in this film make some dumb decisions that make you wonder, "what are you thinking?". I could understand 1 guy making a bad choice, but it seems like all the guys do. If it is to show bravery, it does not come off that way and comes off as just dumb guys making dumb moves.

Overall, I would say that I liked the film. It had a cool looking creature, a good amount of gore, a few surprise moments and the acting wasn't bad. A few faces you will recognize from other things. Maybe a prequel should be made that gives the viewers a little more clarity about the Animal/creature. If a prequel were to be made, I would want to watch it. This movie was definitely better than I expected.

I wish there was a different system of rating movies, 3 stars is "just ok" and its definitely better than that, so I scored it 4. Its done well, the acting was good, the set was good, I Iiked the characters and the "Animal" was convincing & very scary. It wasn't done with CGI at all and it has that kind of a raw feel to it. There was one or two things a character did that bothered me but it didn't take away from it. Also I wanted to add, a lot of reviews basically called it cliché because as an example, a character falling while running. They were running, most likely, faster then they have in their life, at night in the pitch black woods, absolutely terrified with a nightmarish, horrifying "Animal" charging, growling & screeching behind them; If you were up against this, can anyone really say that they are 100% sure they wouldn't fall, at least once? I can't guarantee that I wouldn't have, it also does makes it more intense. You are viewing this from a safe location with friends & or family, you didn't just witness a close one being ripped to shreds and snacked on by an unknown, ominous creature/animal with rows of razor sharp, mini blade like teeth and while they were still alive, they were screaming in pain. If you just let that stuff go and also not judge it because it is a chiller movie I think more will enjoy it. I tried to find more movies like this but it isn't easy to come by. There is "Creature" & "Beast"& then "Feast", which "Feast" is the only one that is also good, but in a more campy way. The "Animal" is similar in design but I feel it is also very different. Another good one that is similar is "Dog Soldiers" . They are both good and scary in their own way, for me the scare from "Animal" lingers after the movie is over but it doesn't with "Dog Soldiers", the fear ends when the movie ends. Sorry for the length. Hopefully I didn't talk it up too much. I just didn't get why there were so many negative reviews on here & on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course this is just my opinion but hopefully you will give it a shot and enjoy it.

Sept. 8, 2022 - I'm not sure why this movie got so many negative reviews from average viewers. I don't know what they expected from a horror movie. I was surprised by the fairly good acting and writing in this movie. Obviously it's a low budget production but that doesn't detract from movie because of the plot. There are a few jump scares and an original looking monster. Above all, the characters act as though they have actual brains that function, and have their own agendas. Not a bad movie if you like the genre. I found it interesting that the movie was filmed on a location within driving distance of where I live in Connecticut U.S.A.

After having read the reviews, I decided to purchase this movie. Quite solid, suspenseful horror movie. The creature is sort of an alien looking killer. The acting is good, and the buildup to the climax is well done. If you can get this for a cheap price, it's worth it. Certainly good enough for multiple viewings.
