The first night I tried it, the skunk got the bait but the lid didn't catch. I used a vanilla Oreo, split, with Peanut Butter. But the mistake I made was putting it on top of the "lever" in the back. The lever is connected to a rod that runs to the top of the trap to an outside bolt that latches the trap door. Problem is, by setting the bait ON the lever, it doesn't cause the bolt to "lift" springing the door. The next night, more peanut butter but under the lever so it would lift the lever -> lift the rod and bolt -> and release the trap door. You can see inside through the holes but I suggest looking in the front end rather than near the door, just in case.
How you decide to dispose of it is up to you. Some people mention drowning or releasing it. The skunk I caught was bigger than a cat and stuck so that would not have been an option anyway.
