We made our purchased in Dec 2015. When the stairs arrived, I thought they were cheaply made for $50 but I was unable to find steps that would work for our 40 lb basset hounds.
The stairs worked for the first couple of months and then the stairs angle support collapsed while one of the dogs was on the steps. Of course we were past the deadline to return the pet stairs back to Amazon.
The tiny cheap quality hinges broke and came completely out of the faux wood and the safety locking pin did not extend far enough to engage in the hole.
I purchased quality hinges at the hardware store and secured the support leg back to the stairs and this helped with engaging the safety locking pin.
The repair worked for a while and then the same thing happened again. Once again the stairs collapsed and the new hinges striped completely out of the poor quality wood.
My husband and I repaired the steps again but this time did away with the "support" legs and constructed our own supports using 2x1's and securing with wood screws. This makes the steps much safer and steadier for the dogs.
The actual steps and treads have been ok, as stated above the whole hinge locking support is a massive fail!
I wish I could give zero STARS!
Yes, the quality of the wood isn't excellent, but after making sure that all of the (tiny) screws on the bottom were tightened, AND that the 2 locking mechanisms were REALLY secure, I gave it a try. Stuart, my 18-year-old, blonde tabby could no longer jump up on the bed due to pretty sudden onset of arthritis in his hips and one front arm/leg. Besides fitting exactly what Stuart and I needed, this functional piece LOOKS nice in my house and should blend in well with almost any décor.
Because of a small bedroom and limited space, I positioned this NEXT to one side of the bed (with one entire side against the bed), as opposed to perpendicular to the bed. Not only didn't this position not block my way, but it also seemed to help Stuart feel more secure about using it...with one entire side of the steps having a "wall" (side of the bed).
I was able to train Stuart, to use these steps, in less than 20 minutes! Broke several of his favorite treats into tiny pieces. Started out with putting some on the 1st step...then the 2nd...then the 3rd...and finally the 4th. Repeated this 3 times, then let him be. Then I sat on the bed to read and wait to see what he would do. Within a few minutes, he game up to be with me...and has been using the steps ever since.
Have had this now for about 6 weeks. I have not moved it. I believe that this may be a key in keeping it from collapsing...not moving it from one location to another.
