Editorial Reviews

Anita O Day shows in this set why her over-all feeling and delivery mark her as one of the few women in the field who could ever accurately be called a jazz singer. She was a more imaginative singer than her imitators, not merely because she was original, but also because she was much more inventive. Two talented and utterly dissimilar arrangers contributed the imaginatively varied scores for these sessions, the first two by Buddy Bregman, the last three by Jimmy Giuffre. Reveling in the settings the difference between hot and cool Anita O Day has a great time, not only on the swinging tunes, to which she contributes some trademark, zestful, inventive scatting, but also in singing ballads with a sure touch. Backing her, Bregman and Giuffre used some of the finest Hollywood jazzmen, with Stan Getz particularly warm and lyrical on I Never Had a Chance. These are probably the best jazz sides recorded by Anita O Day in the Fifties, and if you enjoy vocal records in the slightest bit, do yourself a favor and get this one.

By Mike Tarrani HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on July 8, 2012
Format: MP3 Music
The tracks on this album are mainly taken from Anita's first album for Verve, Anita and Cool Heat. This album does not contain the complete set of tracks from ether album, and some of the tracks are drawn from other albums, especially the Bregman arrangements.

What I love about this collection from two great arrangers is the selection of songs. That is reflection of my personal taste, so take that with a grain of salt. Since this product page has sound samples for each track you can play through them to hear if this is an album you would enjoy.

Sound quality is superb on my MP3 album, and I am assuming that it is even better on the CD version.

Although the favorite songs are both subjective and personal, I will reveal the ones on this album that caused me to purchase it: No Moon At All (I love the trombone arrangement on that song), Mack the Knife (Anita swings like crazy), My Heart Belongs to Daddy (of course Eartha Kitt's rendition is the gold standard, but I love the way Anita sings it too), and It Had to be You (interesting phrasing gives this version a different feel.)

For the avid fan, the tracks were recorded at the following Los Angeles studios: Capitol Studios, December 8, 1955 & December 20, 1956 and Radio Recorders April 6, 7 & 8, 1959.

If you are looking for a good sampler album with tracks from Anita's best years with Verve this is an excellent choice in my opinion. Before taking the plunge I recommend that you also check out 8 Classic Albums, which is a collection of half of her Verve recordings that contains all of the songs on this album plus many more.

The songs by Anita O'Day are great, but this compilation is way overpriced and totally uncalled for while Avid's collection of four albums is available: Four Classic Albums.
