I'm not sure if other people have this problem. One guy described it in his review but hadn't found the reason for the issue. I have ordered numerous devices lately that didn't work with Windows 8 properly so I decided to test this thing out. I plugged it in securely to the electrical outlet and straightened out the USB 3.0 cable. These cables are strange. 4 pin standard USB on one side and this micro connection on the other side that is like 7 pins. So my first issue was the power button on the back. You have to hold it down to make the hub connect to the PC and power on. Very annoying. Then I kept hearing the device connection and disconnection sound over and over. The hub was sitting in my lap and I was not moving. I waited to see if it would stop but it kept going at a random interval. Then I started manipulating the thin cable connection of the USB cable into the hub and discovered that the slightest pressure up or down would result in disconnection / reconnection. This is unacceptable. Other people mentioned something similar to this but not in detail and other people stated that anything they plugged into the hub for an extended period of time would become destroyed. Most likely due to unsafe disconnection from the PC over and over again. This hub is unreliable and I plan to find one with a better design. Another fault people mentioned in their reviews was that every time you restart the computer you must hit the power button again. That's no good for me because I would most likely place it under my desk.

To make it short:
USB 3.0 connection at hub very delicate causing the hub to constantly disconnect / reconnect.
Design flaw with power button needing to be pressed at every restart.
Flimsy. Awkward. Delicate. NO BUENO!
ALWAYS TEST THESE DEVICES SO YOU CAN RETURN THEM IN A TIMELY FASHION.

I purchased the 7 USB 3.0 ports + 2 charging ports version. I'll review the charging and data ports separately since they serve separate functions.

Charging ports: I have a LOT of devices to charge and I was very excited about the prospect of reducing cord clutter and organizing my charging "area." The Anker USB hub did not disappoint. First of all I plugged in my 4th generation iPad into the 5V 2.1A charging port since 2.1A is what is supplied by the standard Apple iPad chargers. The iPad charged perfectly. Next, I plugged the same iPad into the 5V 1.5A charging port and lo and behold.....my iPad started charging just fine! Now, it didn't charge quite as fast, but still it is good to note that both charging ports are capable of charging the 4th generation iPad. (Of note, the 7 data ports will not charge the iPad). The hub does NOT have to be plugged into a computer for the charging ports to charge my iPad. Next, I plugged in my iPhone(s) in each charging port. I plugged in an iPhone 3, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 all of which will charge in either charging port (faster in the 2.1A port). All of these iPhones will also charge in any of the 7 USB 3.0 data ports. The hub does NOT have to be plugged into a computer for the charging ports or the data ports to charge my iPhones. Lastly, I have a few Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus rechargeable battery packs that I tried in the charging and data ports. The battery packs will recharge in all 7 data ports and in both charging ports. Of course the charging speed for the iPhones and battery packs is the slowest in the 7 data ports (but no slower than plugging the phones or battery packs directly into my USB 3.0 ports on my computer), then next fastest in the 1.5A charging port and blazing fastest of all in the 2.1A charging port.

This unit resets itself every time you restart your computer requiring you to manually turn it on every time you use it. Not a problem if it is on your desk, but a big problem is in the back of a cabinet.

I was also wanting this for charging a cell phone faster than just plugging it into a USB on my computer, however, it would not charge my cell phone (S4 Active), nor my tablet (Galaxy tab 10.1). It did charge them some, but actually at a slower rate than the USB 3.0 on my laptop.

I like the design--there are several specific things I really like about it:

Lights on the device let me know things are working.
Light on the power brick lets me know it's on
The device is slim
The power adapter has a short power cord that goes to the brick, so I'm able to plug this into my power strip easily

But what I don't like:

From the day I received it the device would not turn on when my computer came out of sleep mode, and sometimes it didn't work when I turned on my computer. I'd have to play with the power button to get it to work. Then it died completely--the light on the power brick flashed and went out completely, and it won't power on now.

Another problem is that portable hard drives plugged into the device won't work. I found a lot of message boards where other people had similar problems with their USB hubs didn't provide enough power. I don't know if that's my problem or not, and it doesn't really matter since the power brick is dead and this hub is useless. And since it's past my return window, I'm outta luck. :-(

So 5 stars for design and features, but 0 stars for the portable USB drive problem and dead brick...so overall it gets 1 star. I was hoping for something better.

UPDATE 9/1/2013: Changed to 5 stars. Anker shipped a replacement, which works well. Very happy with this product.
