Quality build, but not charging sometimes

I bought this mainly for all the Apple product my spouse and I have. We use all five ports for our watches, iPads, iPhones, Kindles, and Bluetooth headphones. I went and checked my iPhone (using official cables on all devices) and it said "This accessory may not be supported" and would not charge. Next, checked my watch and it was not charging and was at 3% life (had been "charging" all night).

This has happened with both of the chargers I bought (one for me and one for spouse). Seems Apple products do not like this charging port. Went back to using the official Apple ports, which completely negates this purchase and makes it void. Sucks, because the build quality is really nice.

EDIT: Company reached out and sent a different charger along with a lightning cable. Haven't had any issues currently with it, but it didn't replace the second one I had bought from them as well. Good customer support though and would likely buy from again. Wish this wouldn't be an issue, though.

Received the below note from Anker, when I finally asked for a replacement when 4 ports were dead the denied it. Products are just like any generic chargers and customer service is poor

The simple explanation

If your device or cable malfunctions, a charging port may become "dead" or unusable. This does not pose any safety risk to you or your devices.

The details

As this charger has an industry-high charge output designed into an ultra-compact profile, we've taken extensive measures to ensure complete safety for you and your devices, including meeting the UL certificate requirements. One of these measures is a built-in fuse on each charging port that trips when a connected device draws more than 3 amps of current. As no current popular devices require such a high amperage, this happens only when the cable or device is malfunctioning (usually a major or micro short circuit). The tripped fuse prevents your device and cable from sustaining damage, but because it can't be reset, results in a "dead port" that is no longer usable.

Our product development team has upgraded the circuitry to a current limiting switch that also limits the current output to under 3 amps but automatically resets afterwards.

How to avoid this issue

Remember to only use quality cables: To ensure complete safety and best performance, we strongly recommend using your device's original cable or a third-party certified one (such as MFI).

Avoid charging in a confined spaces: To ensure against overheating, avoid using the charger in confined spaces or in higher than room temperature environments.

What should I do if my charger has a "dead port"?

If your charger has a "dead port" that doesn't charge or any concern, please contact Anker customer support with 1) the product SN number (found on the side of the product) and 2) your current shipping address and we'll send you an upgraded replacement right away.

A great solution for a problem I didn't realize I had

Every so often a product pops up to meet a need I didn't know I had. This is one of those products.

My wife and I between us have a fairly extensive menagerie of USB-chargeable devices: phones, tablets, Bluetooth speakers and headphones, and myriad other devices. USB charging is ubiquitous enough that I now get annoyed upon receiving a device that has a proprietary charger.

When you juggle a lot of chargeable devices, there's always the question of "Am I using the correct wall wart?" USB always provides five volt power, but the different wall warts have different charging capacities. Using a charger with too little capacity will cause slow charging. And of course, there's always the issue of finding enough outlets to accomodate all of the wall warts.

This little device, priced only marginally higher than some USB wall warts, solves those problems. The 40W capacity (that's 8 amps at 5 volts, for those of you who glossed over basic electricity during your high-school science class), is enough to simultaneously charge several devices.

The only time you might run out of capacity is if you try to charge five high-capacity devices simultaneously. Some tablets, for example, require 10W chargers; you can only charge four of these at one time using the Anker PowerPort 5. I've never tried to charge five tablets at once. I assume from having read the product description that this charger will simply reduce the charge rate, taking a bit longer to reach full charge.

These Anker chargers are so handy that we bought a bunch to leave around the house in locations where we're likely to need a USB charger.

For external power banks, USB cables, and now it seems multi-port charging - Anker is my go to for this type of stuff. I recently purchased this item to charge many things at once. I charge my phone, vape, two power bricks plus I have an outlet to share for a friend. I'm an A/V Tech and sometimes we need to drop iPads in discreet locations that do not have power supplies. I used this port to charge all of my banks the night before, it's just easy. 40W charges your phone very fast. I lay this thing on it's side, it can fall very easily. The only thing I would ask for is for rubber feet or one surface of the unit to be made of rubber to prevent sliding. That's less one star for durability.

Other than that very small, nitpicky thing, I would not hesitate to buy this, especially if you have many devices you want to charge at once.
