It’s useful. I've bought two of these for my conference room where we use a mix of MacBook Pros and iPhones.
- One socket/charger can power 4 devices
- Uses C7 power cord (non polarized)
- Versatile, depending on what you plug in
- Relatively large (but smaller and neater than 4 separate chargers)
- Seems to apportion power based on sockets used (not actual wattage used)
- Must unplug unused charging cables to free up capacity
Next year, I expect similar GaN based chargers to be *much* smaller.
and one by Satechi: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M97XGNZ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_1WcGDb4F35FZA
I actually own three of the Nekteck and have them around my house. The Nekteck has one USB-C port, up to 60W, and three USB-A ports that share a max of 12W, which is acceptable but I wanted a way to charge my laptop at 87W and my iPhone faster than 12W, or charge two USB-A devices each at 12W.
I use a 15" 2018 MacBook Pro and a portable USB-C battery from ZMI that can charge and discharge at 45W. I also have the USB-C to Lightning iPhone cable for fast charging, and also sometimes charge a Ronin SC which fast charges over USB-C but can also slow charge on USB-A, and a dual battery charger for my camera's batteries that uses micro-USB from a USB-A port. I carry the Satechi in my bag because it has one 60W port, one 18W USB-C port, and the two USB-A ports share 12W total. I can charge my laptop at 60W while still charging another device from the USB-C port.
I had hoped this could replace the Satechi, but it only delivers 100W if the single USB-C port is in use. If I even plug my iPhone in via the second USB-C to lightning cable, not only does my laptop drop to 50W, but neither of the USB-C ports seem to support fast charging an iPhone X! I frequently edit video on my laptop while another device charges and often 60W is barely tolerable but 50W or less is unacceptable for a charger that costs three times more than the Nektech and is over twice as big and heavy.
I really wish this could do proper iPhone fast charging, and I also wish it could intelligently split and/or prioritize one USB-C port depending on power demands from my laptop.
I'm better off returning this and continuing on with the smaller, lighter, and cheaper Satechi or Nekteck. It even looks like the Nekteck just got an update to a new model that supports 87W on one USB-C port, while delivering 12W each to two pairs of USB-A ports: https://www.amazon.com/Nekteck-Charger-Certified-Delivery-MacBook/dp/B07DGTFQTD/ref=dp_ob_title_wld
This device can offer full charging speed to multiple devices simultaneously. It's bigger, yes, bigger than any other Anker charger I have, including the Anker 5 port wall charger, but I prefer to carry one tool that does its job well. No more cobbling together several chargers and cables and hoping I have outlets ideally located. Because this isn't a direct to wall charger, it has a cable, it gives me more liberty to charge devices where they logically fit.
Overall, if you travel with several devices and find yourself struggling to keep everything charged and organized, this may solve your problem like it did for me.
Primary use case for me: USB C 1 - 13" Macbook Pro, USB C 2 - 11" iPad Pro, USB A 1 - iPhone XS Max, USB A 2 - Apple Watch
The good: it's one charger for 2 USB-C and 2 USB-A, and it accepts 110V or 220V, which is a fantastic idea for traveling or for a home charging station.
The bad: "Intelligent Power Allocation" is a stretch. If you plug in one USB-C device, it will charge it at 100W. If you plug in other cables (even if there are no devices attached), it will drop down significantly. I wish plugging in my USB-C phone would take less away from my USB-C laptop. I debated for a while but decided this is a deal-breaker for me; I'm returning it. It's better to have separate chargers that can be used at full speed. I hope in a year or so they'll have something that really lives up to this "Intelligent Power Allocation" marketing-speak.
A review on Anker's website (from "Custom Designs") listed actual power distribution you get based on what cables are attached. It matches my own testing. I'll quote it here:
