The adapter comes in a small box and includes a USB 3.0 cable that seemed to be pretty decent quality, a power adapter, and the unit itself. Unfortunately the power adapter isn't USB, so you do need the dedicated power brick. But, that also guarantees you aren't going to under power this thing when a hard drive starts drawing to spin the platters.
My iMac only has USB 2.0 ports so throughput wasn't as high as the adapter could theoretically go. Using "SuperDuper!" on a 640gb hard drive to a 1TB drive on the external connection took about 8 hours. I likely could have copied it faster if I had booted to OS X on an external drive and used the Drive Utility to do a direct clone. That would've meant a bitwise copy though and 5 years worth of fragmentation, temp files, and any other garbage that might have built up. So SuperDuper! helped me clean up the filesystem to improve performance at the same time as it copied.
Using the adapter was very straight forward. I plugged the adapter into the new hard drive and set the works down on the anti-static bag that the hard drive came in just to try and keep it insulated from random shocks. I then attached the USB cable to the computer and finally added power. My iMac quickly found the drive and I went through the process of partitioning/formatting it and finally launched into my cloning operation. When I was done I simply tucked the works back into the little box it came in and put it in the desk drawer to await the next time I need it. And, if in the meantime I happen to need a USB 3.0 cable, well I have a handy one that came with this adapter.

Great support by Anker to reach out to me and provide additional information on the issues I've experienced. It was appreciated to receive confirmation that there are known compatibility issues with the Samsung 850 EVO SSD (unspecified drive protocols). Samsung also acknowledged an issue exists. It appears the Intel Series 535 SSD has the similar incompatibilities, but the manufacturer has not yet confirmed that. Unfortunately, the incompatibilities are not published anywhere, so it's reasonable to expect problems with using the latest SSD's with USB (which is how laptop data migration is done). Ideally, the SSD manufacturers would publish SSD/USB-SATA combinations that are confirmed to work. It would save a lot of time and money futilely purchasing and experimenting with multiple combinations of SSD's and adapters.

I've upgraded the rating to five stars because of Anker's above and beyond support. Anker's customer service demonstrated excellent communications and fundamental understanding of the issues. Receiving confirmation of specific incompatibilities that exist will save a lot of time and energy going forward. Anker's customer service serves as a role model for other technology suppliers to follow.
