Nice, elegant design, but not compatible with all devices and the power supply makes noise

update: I have three of these. The power supply for each one makes an obnoxious noise. I assume this is a design flaw and something wrong with the electronics or wiring. Could it be a fire hazard? Could it be the reason my Thrustmaster Warthog Throttle was not getting sufficient power? These power supplies also don't work with Oculus Rift sensors. When you run the OR setup, it will reject the sensors when plugged into these hubs so I had to plug them into the motherboard directly. On the bright side, after my initial review, Anker contacted me and wanted to send me a replacement to see if it fixed my throttle issue. That's when I noticed the noise and confirmed they all make the noise but none of my other power supplies do (other brands, other devices). I will update again after I determine whether the new unit works with the throttle or OR sensor.

original review: Nice, elegant design. Blue LEDs aren't overly bright or intense. However, despite being powered, there is insufficient power for a Thrustmaster Warthog Throttle. This throttle works just fine on my old Belkin USB 2.0 hub, but when plugged into this Anker hub, the LEDs flicker and it loses connection intermittently. This basically renders it unusable. I had heard of this issue over the years when people used unpowered hubs, but the solution was always to use a powered hub. This is a powered hub, yet it's behaving as if it's not. I'm seeing a green light on the unit where it plugs in, and if I unplug the power cable everything disconnects, so I assume it's not a problem with the unit receiving power. It seems to be a design flaw.

Doesn't Work with SanDisk Ultra Fit Thumb Drives

Seemed to be working okay with USB Keyboard and Bluetooth dongle, but on day 3 I plugged in my SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 32GB thumb drives (4 of them) and no blue light on the Hub and Windows 10 does not see them. Remove them and try each on individually on the same port on my computer the hub is plugged into, and they all work fine. So not an OS problem.

When I removed them from the hub, they were excessively hot. Tried some old Kingston 16GB USB 2.0 thumb drives in each port on the hub and they work fine. Clearly we have an issue with the hub not recognizing the SanDisk Ultra for whatever reason.

As the main reason I got this hub was to easily use these thumb drives that I use extensively daily, and that does not work, I will be returning this.

UPDATE: Anker promptly contacted me and issued a refund with apology. While I wish the product had worked properly with my thumb drives, I do give high praise for the customer service response from Anker and the no-hassle refund.

Not recommended with the Raspberry Pi

This seems like a nice enough hub, but my intended use was to run my Gridseed miners from my Raspberry Pi 2. I am sorry to report that this is not compatible with the Pi and the miners. When I plug in the miners I get errors that the USB cannot be addressed and the devices will not be assigned. The error appears to be power related when searching out the errors. Anker has a good reputation with users of the Pi and with miners, but in this case it appears this product falls short. Just wanted to give folks who are looking for a usb hub for the Raspberry Pi a heads up that I would not recommend this model. There is another model that does appear to be verified to work. So my new Anker hub that just arrived is useless for my intended purpose. I hope you find this helpful so you don't waste your time and money. I am sure this product works well with a different intended audience.

Update 03/03/2016: I have updated my rating on this product from 2 stars to 4 stars. To my surprise Anker contacted me regarding my issues with the Anker 10 port USB hub. They confirmed that this product does not work with the Raspberry Pi and that they were sorry about the issues this has caused. They indicated that they will be updating the product description to inform customers that this usb hub will not work with the Raspberry Pi. That was good to hear. I had heard Anker made good products and was recommended by many people. I have to say this USB hub does appear to be a well made and a nice hub. But what surprised me was that Anker provided a full refund for the hub due to the problems I have had. Now that is customer service. I will certainly be looking at Anker products going forward based on this experience. They went out of their way to take care of me on this issue. So don't buy this to use with your Raspberry Pi, but otherwise it appears to be a well made product that the company actually backs.

I have been a fan of Anker for years, but I have to say this hub is a really big disappointment. Considering what I paid for this a year or so ago, I was amazed at how it just stopped working completely after a short time. It just fails, first, the "IQ" ports stop charging, then the other posts give up the ghost as well. Sad, as I had really hoped to continue to buy a quality product. I had raved about them in the past, but with this simple item failing in a year, I have to say they will not be getting any free advertising from this ex-fan.

Does Not Charge iPad Pro, iPhone X, and many others

Apparently Anker has not been able to solve the great engineering feat of charging and transferring data to an iPad Pro via USB. This hub will not charge most of the newer Apple devices, including iPad Pro 10.5, 11, 12.9, and iPhone X, XS, etc. I thought maybe there was something wrong with my hub, but according to Anker you can either charge or you can transfer data, but you cannot do both.

The 3 dedicated charging ports on this hub are only for charging; they will not provide the data transferring.

While the 7 ports data ports are intended for data transfer only. They provide insufficient power output for charging(up to 0.9 amps each).

According to the test, the iPad Pro 10.5" needs at least 1 A to display charging, which the data ports can't provide insufficient power for it. So there is no port which can charge and transfer data for your iPad Pro 10.5" at the same time. So sorry about that.

Overheating issues. Caution.

Let's get this straight. I love Anker. Their powercore battery/charger unit is my favourite product and they've always been on point with support.

I've used this product for 3 months and for the first 2 it worked as advertised, with chargers charging efficiently and USB 3.0 operating at the rated speeds. However, recently I've been having to switch my peripheral usb dongles (I use wireless mice) as well as my DAC/AMP which has been presenting with very choppy audio output. Any form of data medium I put in (usb drive, SD card adapter) overheats and it becomes a real concern for frying my cards. The whole brick itself gets pretty hot despite being left out in an open and ventilated area. If you currently have this unit, I suggest not leaving anything left charging for extended periods of time nor do I recommend leaving usb sticks/SD cards in for prolonged periods lest you fry them. I honestly thought I had upgraded when I picked this up coming from a lower port count Aukey alternative but until they solve this heat issue, I cannot recommend this product.

I've used this hub for nearly 3 years without issue. In fact, I loved it! 7 regular ports and 3 fast charging ports is more than I ever needed.

As I routinely do every few weeks, I plugged my Apple keyboard in to charge. A few moments later, I smelled something burning, and after hunting around for a minute, I found the culprit. The (Apple) Lightning cable plugged into my keyboard was melting before my eyes. I quickly reached to unplug it from the hub, when I noticed the entire hub was extremely hot. My phone had been charging at the same time, which is a rarity - I typically only have one device charging at a time, so perhaps the two of them charging at once caused the hub to overheat? Regardless, that shouldn't be the case since the hub has 3 fast charging ports.

Not taking any chances, I've ordered a replacement hub, and a different brand this time. If you're using this hub, or any other USB hub with fast charging ports, I would be sure not to leave them unattended while charging. I can only imagine what would have happened if I wasn't around at the time of this incident.

Could have been awesome, but defective

Mine seems to have a problem running any data device, whether it be USB keys or external hard drives. The devices will disconnect every couple of seconds and then reconnect. They also become incredibly HOT (the male USB tip that is plugged in the hub) to a point where it almost burns my finger. I assume this is not very safe and could potentially damage some components.

I tried several different USB ports on my PC. I tried disabling USB Selective Suspend in my Windows power settings. I tried disabling "Allow windows to turn off this device" for all my USB device in Device Manager. I even tried messing with BIOS USB settings. Nothing seems to fix this issue.

So far the only thing that I can get working with stability in this hub is my mouse's wireless dongle and that's it. I have a cheap 8$ USB hub and I never had any of these issues with it.

Sadly I missed Amazon's return window by about two weeks now, so unless Anker has some sort of RMA process that won't cost me a fortune in shipping I am pretty much stuck with this brick.

If it wasn't for this issue this would be a great device. The construction feels premium. Either I got a lemon or there is a serious design flaw with these hubs.

If I reviewed this the first week I had it, I would have given it 5 stars. I held off my review of this one for a few weeks, just in case. I'm glad I did. It worked well for maybe a month...NOW...any USP port that held a drive has died. Four ports are now non functional. That didn't take long. The charging ports still work and two of the seven USP ports. (They were linked to my Wacum tablet and my TrackIR. Anything with an external hard drive plugged no longer works. Very disappointing.

*** A couple weeks have passed and I have since been in contact with Anker support. I will say that they did respond, made some testing suggestions, which I complied with. They responded quickly and efficiently. After that said testing failed to produce a positive result, they admitted that it was an unusual problem and a new replacement hub is now on it's way. I upgraded my original rating from one star to four, primarily because the support process went so well. I will continue to monitor the replacement and may upgrade the rating further if all goes well from here on out. I will say, that I'm quite satisfied with the product support. Thanks Anker!

For those who maybe interested to know. In order for this hub to work, you need a constant power source to it by using the provided power adapter.

The last 3 Power IQ usb ports are only for charging. Your computer will not be able to see any devices connected to those ports. They are great for high-speed charging when you need to juice up quickly on the go.
