2.0 out of 5 stars Wireless Charging Stands Speed Test: Which charges fastest?
By Johnny on January 8, 2019
Three wireless cell charging stands capable of highest speed charging were put to the test. Which charges fastest? Read on to find out. Each is capable Apple IOS devices at 7.5 watts and Androids at 10 watts. The models compared were the Anker Powerwave Fast Wireless Charging Stand with Internal Cooling Fan, Anker Fast Wireless Charging Stand, and the Choetech Fast Wireless Charging Stand.

Spoiler Alert: Although all three chargers worked effortlessly. The least expensive Choetech consistently charges fastest.

Anker Fast Wireless Charging Stand: I received this model first after asking for it as a holiday present. At about $30 without the necessary add-on Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 charging block, it is priced fairly. This Anker is sleek looking and is perfect for overnight charging on the nightstand. Although I have been happy with disc-type chargers, I wanted to use my iPhone Xs as a bedside alarm clock. Paired with a wireless charging stand like any of these reviewed, it’s a great combo. I later learned that an upright phone next to the computer is quite useful, too. This Anker model is good looking with clean design lines. In an hour of charging from nearly depleted state its average battery capacity increase was 36.66% testing with both the iPhone X and iPhone Xs. It was relatively consistent and quiet, an important bedside feature. Its six foot usb cable works equally well to reach an outlet from a desk.

Anker Powerwave Fast Wireless Charging Stand with Internal Cooling Fan: Surprisingly, my experience started to turn downhill with this top of the line model costing about $50 with charging block. First, it only came with a three-foot cable although recent Amazon reviews state that after receiving complaints, Anker switched to the same six foot cable used in their less expensive model. Its three foot cable makes it impossible to use at desk height. In my opinion, this model is really only usable at a desk or perhaps in an environment where you want to watch a film or play games on your phone. The tiny cable only reaches an outlet from the nightstand. However, the catch is that the fan noise makes it a poor choice for overnight use bedside.

I thought that corresponding with Anker’s customer service would easily solve the problem. Anker has a good reputation for service and I once had a USB cable that went bad easily replaced without argument. However, Anker stiffed me. Their odd response was that only the units shipping from Amazon now have the longer cable. If you buy this model from anywhere else, they refuse to replace it. So disappointing considering that Anker sells the same model with the exact same product photos at different retailers. I happened to buy mine from the U.S.’ largest electronic chain but all Anker offered was a 10% discount on an additional cable. Escalating the complaint moved the discount up very slightly. For a model with a cooling fan, Anker’s callous response was not at all cool, especially for its top of the line model. Charging speeds were on par with the less expensive Anker model, averaging 36.5% increase from a nearly depleted state.

Choetech Fast Wireless Charging Stand: The Choetech turned out to be the surprising winner all around. It’s also sleek looking, impressively built, and costs $15-$20 at any given time on Amazon. Keep an eye open for even better lightning deals on this model, too. The Choetech also requires a Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 charging block. Read on for info on buying suggestions for those. In an hour of charging from a nearly depleted state its average battery capacity increase was 38.25% tested with both the iPhone X and iPhone Xs. It gave the most consistent charging times of all chargers tested and is also quiet, perfect for bedside use. Its included four foot usb cable works equally well to reach an outlet just fine from desk height.

Although all of these chargers reach respectable speeds for wireless models, the Choetech was about 4% faster than the less expensive Anker model, and 5% faster than the high-priced Anker model with cooling fan. Lastest Android phones that charge at 10 w will perform a bit faster.

I decided to try the Choetech stand because I’ve had such great luck with their highly praised USB-C to Lightning rapid wired car charger. What a speed demon and solidly built, too. That model reaches ultra fast wired speeds. Read more below about the much faster benefits of wired charging. Here’s a link to the Choetech if you are comparing car chargers, too:

About needed Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 charging blocks: All of the major mobile accessories companies also sell their own Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 charging blocks This technology seems to have been developed by Qualcomm and licensed to the various companies. The brand names tend to cost $12 to $15. I’ve compared Anker’s $15 model to generic ones with the Qualcomm name found on Amazon. Results are identical but the generic ones cost $6-9 so I have purchased three of those now with great results.

In the end, I bought two Choetech wireless stands, one for the desk, and one for travel. I’m pretty hooked on the alarm clock overnight setup, especially paired with a nifty analog alarm clock app. That model also comes in a multitude of colors that seem to correspond with iPhone XR colors but are compatible with Androids and other iPhones alike. Since the original $30 Anker black model was placed by my bed, I’ve left it there and satisfied even though Anker’s weird customer service left a bad taste in my mouth.

Wireless Stand Charging Speeds vs. Wireless Disc Style Chargers: In my earlier test of three disc-style wireless chargers, average battery charging capacity gains in an hour ranged from an average of 34% to 38%. The stands may be faster by a negligible amount. That’s not a deal killer—buy the wireless style that’s best for you. Disc models tend to be slightly less expensive.

About "fast" wireless charging vs. wired charging: As you will read elsewhere, wireless charging technology is still relatively early stage. The fastest way to charge an Apple cell by far is with a USB-C charger of at least 18 w and an Apple branded USB-C to lightening wired connector. The best article on this topic can be found from MacRumors. It compares various methods head to head.

Wired charge speeds are the same whether you use an 18w power brick, or one of any higher wattage. That is how I discovered the petite Aukey 18w charger and we now own three. On sale, they can occasionally be found on Amazon as low as $11. Expect Apple to allow other companies make USB-C to lightning cables beginning in 2019. As of this writing, you MUST buy Apple's at $19 each. Thus, for a fair $30 you have a wired setup that will consistently get you from 0% to 70% in just thirty minutes. That’s more than twice as fast as wireless charging. The Aukey mini 18w charging block is a true bargain.

For our use, we’ve settled on a combination of wireless and wired chargers for our cellphones. By the way, I have no relationship with any electronics company. Just a “detail” guy here to share my experiences.

    HAPPY CHARGING!

Once again, a top quality product from Anker. Using this with my new Galaxy Note 9 and a Spigen Neo Hybrid cover. Connected in both Portrait and Landscape positions with my phone cover in place and charges very quickly. We'll built and the charging light is not too bright at night time while charging on bed side cabinet. Would recommend
