One adapter has most of my desktop gear plugged into it, including a powered USB 3 hub, and will act as my primary "docking station" when I'm home. The other will supplement with an HDMI and extra USB when I need it while also being the adapter that I carry with me when I travel.
I do think this is probably the best option for the money in spite of docking one star from the review (will cover later). It seems well built and everything seems to work as expected out of the box with the exception of the ethernet port. I like the styling that matches (near enough) that of the MBP. The ports are solid and plugs into them fit snugly without being difficult to plug or unplug devices. Power throughput from the Apple adapter also seems to work fine.
Regarding the failed ethernet functionality, I'm happy to report that it now does work for me after installing an updated driver for the Realtek chip. I did not dock a star due to this failing to work out of the box as I understand driver installation is sometimes a necessary part of getting additional hardware to work.
In none of the other reviews that I read nor in the product information was I made aware that this would be necessary. Also fine. It happens.
So I navigate to Anker's website and visit the product page for the device I purchased. It's basic and provides copies of Amazon reviews, cursory product information, and a link to buy the product on Amazon (obviously their primary marketplace). No way to find support for the product from the product page.
Then I navigate to their Support section and search for USB-C Mini Dock and get no results. After several other searches, including "ethernet," "HDMI," and more, I failed to find any support information for this product. At all.
Finally I decide to use the search for Ethernet to find the support information for their USB + Ethernet adapter that looks very similar to this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D0XTF9U/ref=psdc_281413_t2_B071XY4ZKJ - I think). I downloaded the Mac OS driver for this device, installed it, rebooted, and the ethernet now works fine.
I removed a star not for the quality of the device nor for the fact that I had to install a driver, but rather because finding what I needed in order to support the device was very kludgy and would be highly non-obvious for most customers. Anker has great products, but can definitely do more to help their customers find the support they need on Anker's own website.
I work in IT, primarily Mac support. I purchased this for my Macbook Pro 13". I have noticed it gets fairly warm - I wouldn't call it "hot" likes others have.
The USB ports seems to always work when I plug it in.
The HDMI port is pretty hit and miss. Today when I came into work and plugged in I had absolutely no HDMI and was unable to get it working without rebooting. I'm not willing to reboot my laptop just to connect a monitor so I will no longer use this device. I swapped to an Apple HDMI hydra and things are working without a reboot.
I did not test the Ethernet port.
The Build quality seems great. The USB-C connector doesn't seem to "click" into the port as others do. It seems a bit lower quality than almost every other USB-C connector I've used (including multiple Anker cables, which are great!)
Sorry Anker, but you should stop selling this product and reconsider the hardware you are selling with this device. This is not up to par for an Anker product.
Top reviews from other countries
The hub arrived in the usual, well presented packaging with the added surprise of a protective sleeve for those times when the hub is in my laptop bag. A nice touch that.
USB-B, HDMI output, power through and SD card access worked first time without any need to do anything other than plug it in.
Ethernet however refused to work. But a quick email to Anker support resulted in a driver download and install (plus the by now usual enabling of a third party kernel extension thanks to macOS High Sierra’s security controls) and working ethernet in less than 24 hours turnaround. Having never dealt with Anker support this was a very pleasant experience.
Pros: well designed and solidly made kit that makes my new USB-C only MacBook Pro work as I need to work.
Cons: Ethernet needs a third party driver but once that was provided everything works flawlessly.
- good for desk usage
- good for powering disc burner or external disc (when connected to the power supply)
- nice quality
- not the best solution for bed or on knee usage - cable will be disconnecting from your mac-book from time to time due to movements (USB adapter on cable + ethernet interface with USB hub connected to it by another cable was a better solution for me for this usage)
- it's getting very hot (did someone forgot about ventilation?), to point that you cannot keep a hand on it
- it's getting hot even when mac-book wasn't connected (adapter was connected only to power supply and ethernet) - this is very strange...
Overall, very pleased.
