Over the next few hours I moved the speaker on my desk while plugged-in. ~~ NO excessive pressure or movement on the plug cable. Then I smelled rubber meltdown/burning - the cable was on ON-FIRE & the papers under it also caught FIRE! ~~ Diet Pepsi 2 the rescue. Fortunately I had a full glass of Diet Pepsi on my desk which got used for something never imagined by PepsiCo, Inc. ~ Papers, Cable & Soundcore Mini 2 now in the Palm Beach county dump.
If you are looking for booming, stereo sound that is going to knock your socks off, I would say look elsewhere. In fact, I would recommend the Logitech UE Boom series or any other bluetooth speaker at least 3x the price of this one.
However, the Anker SoundCore mini absolutely does fulfill a niche market where a speaker like this one becomes a godsend.....
If you are looking for something compact to fill, say a bedroom, with decent quality audio, this speaker fits the bill perfectly. I'll talk more about the sound quality of this speaker in a moment including a glaring omission to what is NOT included with this purchase....
I have the Amazon DOT. I needed something small to boost the audio from that device. This Anker product is perfect. It can be used with bluetooth connectivity or wired. I chose wired (and purchased a separate 3.5mm cable), because I find that bluetooth audio with the DOT can sometimes cut out. A wired connection with that device ensures that spoken responses won't be cut off by delayed bluetooth transmission.
So, for those of you who own an Amazon DOT, this is the perfect speaker to accompany that device.
The sound quality is decent. In fact, I'll go one step further to say it's better than one would expect from a device of this size. It does product room-filling sound. It has some bass response, but for those of you who like a lot of "boom," you are going to be disappointed. This speaker is perfect for traveling and filling a hotel room with sound for your own personal enjoyment. This is not particularly great for entertaining a large party where you really want the sound to be in the forefront.
I did test the bluetooth capabilities of this speaker with my iPhone and it worked perfectly. Pairing was fast and easy. Wired connectivity also worked flawlessly.
There is a micro SD slot in the back of the speaker so you can play music directly off a card. I don't quite understand the necessity for this feature as most devices you would connect to this speaker already have a storage feature. I have no need for such a feature, and I would rather that Anker had put their money elsewhere in making this a perfect bluetooth device....
....such as providing a power adapter. This is the one thing that is sorely missing from this speaker. While it comes with a USB charging cable, there is no accompanying power adapter. I find that very "cheap" on Anker's part in not supplying. I was fortunate that I had an extra iPhone adapter lying around. I am not certain those of you reading this review have one as well. For that omission, I deducted one star from this review.
In all, I would rate this speaker a 5-star product for what it is. If you purchase the SoundCore knowing its strengths and limitations, you are going to be very happy with it. It's more of a "personal" speaker than anything else.
However, there is one issue that resulted in giving this 3 star review and that is Auto Sleep. After a short period of no data from the phone, the speaker goes to sleep and you have to flip the power off and on again. I work from home and have to reconnect after each phone call. Most other devices such as this disable Auto Sleep if they are plugged into USB Power, but this is not the case here.
Keep this in mind when purchasing.
The built in FM radio and Micro SD card support was a quite surprising as I thought it would be like most Bluetooth speakers.
It may not have many buttons but the engineers at Anker have cleverly figure out how to squeeze multiple uses into a few buttons. For example, the volume buttons when tapped act as a volume buttons but when held skips to the next or previous track, or to pick up the next or previous stations when in radio mode. The play button when tapped is a play or pause button but can also be used to answer and end calls. When held for 2 seconds, it activates Siri or scan for radio channels when in radio mode.
The MicroSD mode works well with Lossless and MP3 formats tested just by slapping the files on the card and sticking it in. The manual says that card size limit is 32GB but I tested it with a 128GB Samsung Evo+ card and it was able to play the files on the card. The manual says it supports MP3, WAV and WMA formats.
If you take it out of the box and the FM Radio doesn't work, that's because it uses the Micro USB port as a receiving port for the antenna so plug a Micro USB cable into the Micro USB port and start tuning away.
The sound is pretty big and clear for a speaker this small. The volume control range is broad enough for that one can use it in the office without bugging other people or turning it up for a party in a small room.
Anker only provides a MicroUSB cable with it, so if you're planning on using the Aux In port, you'll need your own headphone (3.5mm) jack cable to make use of that feature.
The price of $24.99 provides outstanding value not to mention that Anker's battery powered product use quality cells and are protected by their 18-month worry-free warranty.

Anker are my new favourite company and I'd recommend this to anyone. The sound will easily fill a room and the size makes it as portable as they come. Not to mention the battery playing time, FM radio, SIRI access and more. OUTSTANDING piece of kit.
