Need to charge more than just your mobile phone? Invest in greater, more versatile power with the Anker Astro Pro2.
A beast of a battery.
When a standard external battery just won't cut it, reach for the Astro Pro2. Packed with 20000mAh of capacity, this is one portable power pack that's able to charge most phones 9 times, tablets more than once or a laptop one time.
Choose from between DC 12V / 4A, 16V / 3.5A, 19V / 3A and USB 5V / 2.1A outputs for greater accessibility. The three voltage selections enable this external battery to charge laptops (that meet compatibility requirements) – in addition to virtually all USB-charged devices.
Laptop compatibility requirements (both must be met), Please check to ensure compatibility before purchasing:
1) Voltage input: 11.5-12.5V, 15.5-16.5V or 18.5-19V.
2) A laptop connector that fits your device's power input port (see below).

1st Reported Issue: The USB port doesn't work.
Yes, it probably does - it just doesn't work automatically. Unlike the 12v,16v and 19v pin output which begins charging your device as soon as it is plugged in, the USB output port has to be turned on by pressing the front panel button on the battery. This can be confusing and I believe several people just decided the USB charge port didn't work when it didn't begin charging their USB devices. Just push the button and it will work.
2nd Reported Issue: The battery can be shorted making it useless
I thought this too after I accidentally connected the input and output ports on the battery. It went dead immediately and nothing would get it to start. However, Anker support suggested I connect the battery to the wall charger. As soon as I did this the battery began working again. Connecting the battery to the wall charger resets it. So again, no problem.
Neither of these tips are documented in the battery's instructions so I can understand how people would think the battery was defective when it was actually fine.
I really like this external battery. It is easier to carry around than a wall charger and you can recharge almost every electronic device you own anywhere. It has a lot of capacity and once you know its two quirks it's foolproof to operate. Support from Anker has been great - they are very responsive.
I would like to see Anker redesign the input and output ports so they are not so similar. it is very easy to confuse input and output since they are both pin plugs right next to each other. I ended up putting a piece of electrical tape over the input port just for safety.
I opted to buy this first generation (GEN 1) lithium polymer battery pack rather than the second generation model (GEN 2), due to its ability to be directly charged from a solar panel (15-19V 1.3A = 24.7W maximum input) for camping and field work. For this task, I use the 10 ft DC cable with a 5.5 x 2.5 mm male plug from the excellent Instapark Mercury 27W solar panel ($ 110.00) which directly plugs into the Astro Pro 2 GEN 1 battery pack. The long cable ensures that I can always keep this battery out of the sun while it is being charged from the solar panel.

BiXPower Car Cigarette Lighter Female Socket to 5.5 x 2.5mm & 5.5 x 2.1mm Female Barrel Connector Adapter
I have been delighted with the results and very happy with this system. By contrast, Anker unfortunately do not produce a car plug charger for this GEN 2 battery pack and therefore I would have to step down the solar voltage to 12V 2A (max) (e.g. the small and inexpensive ($ 19.00) PST-DC292 DC/DC converter from PowerStream Technology not available from Amazon). This can then be connected via the 5.5 x 2.1 mm male outlet plug to the Anker Astro Pro 2 input to receive 12V x 2A = 24W! I however still prefer the Astro Pro 2 GEN 1 battery since it can be charged directly from a 18-20V solar panel, and it can output at 12V, 16V or 19V for different devices (e.g. laptops or 12V AA/AAA battery chargers, or be used to charge multiple USB input devices via a car to multiple intelligent USB charger ports (see below).
Thus, I am delighted that the Astro Pro2 GEN 1 battery pack can be charged via this solar panel and I can then charge laptops via the multiple supplied plugs, or tablets and phones via the USB port (5V 2.0 A). IMPORTANTLY, REMEMBER TO PRESS THE CHARGE BUTTON ON THE BATTERY PACK TO INITIATE CHARGING VIA THIS USB PORT! Much better still is that the GEN 1 battery pack has a much higher (> 2.1 times) output (12V 4A, 16V 3.5A, 19V 3.0A) than the GEN 2 (5V 4.5A (max) = 22.4W). I therefore use the 12V 4A (48W) DC output by directly plugging in the 5.5 x 2.5mm male to female car plug (BixPower/BixNet) with a double (Anker: 5V 2.4A & 2.4A) ($ 10.00) or triple (Bolse ($ 15.00): 5V 2.4A, 1.5A & 1.5A; or Aukey (5V 4 x 2.4A (48W) INTELLIGENT car plugs to USB charging ports.

These Anker, Bolse and Aukey USB charging devices can also be directly used from the 18V 1.5A solar panel via a 5.5 x 2.5 mm female to female car plug (Bix Power $ 10.00), since their input can range from 12V to 24V. Thus, for the extra money, the Anker Astro Pro 2 GEN 1 battery pack can charge more USB input devices than the GEN 2 battery pack, but also be charged from a moderately sized (27W) solar panel.
To get the maximum life (500 recharges) out of the Anker GEN 1 battery pack it is a good idea to read the information regarding lithium ion/polymer batteries from Battery University since they should not be stored fully charged and never allowed to be fully depleted. Lithium polymer batteries are regarded to be safer that lithium ion batteries with respect to fire resulting from over-charging them. The Anker Astro Pro 2 is rated at 20,000 mAh or 74 Wh and is therefore well below the 100 Wh limit for taking on international flights (as carry-on items) (N.B. you cannot transport such large lithium ion or polymer batteries in checked baggage), and I put electrical tape over the input and output ports. You can check the IATA transport regulations from the web.
OF ONE CONCERN is that the input and output of the Anker GEN 1 battery pack are the same size (5.5 x 2.5mm) and therefore you could plug in a device to the wrong port. IF THIS HAPPENS YOU HAVE TO PLUG IT INTO THE WALL CHARGING SOCKET OR THE SOLAR PANEL TO RE-ACTIVATE IT. I label the input and output ports on the top since their labels are on the bottom of the battery pack and put electrical tape on the input port to prevent any confusion.
Thus, if you use this battery in a location without an AC electricity connection and it faults due to an input/output mistake or any other reason (e.g. too high a laptop demand), it will simply shut down and you will not be able to reset it without pluging it into a 110/120 or 220/240V AC power supply. AS SUCH, THIS BATTERY DOES NOT HAVE A RESET BUTTON FOR WHICH I TAKE OFF 1 STAR (4 STAR RATING).
In conclusion, I have been delighted with the Anker Astro Pro 2 GEN 1 battery pack due to its high capacity, elegant and well-made style, and which can be charged directly from a solar panel as well as having a very high output allowing it to charge many more USB dependent devices than the GEN 2 battery pack.
