With that said, it does get a bit campy, the pacing and story seemed uneven to me sometimes.
If you like musicals and zombie movies, especially movies like Shaun of the Dead which is similar in tone, I recommend giving this movie a try.
Our heroine, Anna Shepherd (Ella Hunt) and her best (nonromantic) friend, John deal with the usual high school pranks and hijinks at her Scottish high school. John’s a bit odd and clearly wants their friendship to get past the just friends stage. He’s the brunt of many a joke instigated by Nick (Ben Wiggins), evidently the ‘cool’ guy in school who once had a thing with Anna. Steph North’s (Sarah Swire) girlfriend is out of town or country or something and because of her sexual preferences has few friends in school.
Making sure adults also have their own prejudices, the writers under the direction of John McPhail (“Where Do We Go from Here?”) include Anna’s widower father Tony (Mark Benton), the brunt of the about-to-be-headmaster Arthur Savage’s (Paul Kaye) belittlement. Tony is the school’s janitor.
Things go topsy turvy one beautiful morning full of songs by Anna and others when a virus hits the world, turning people into zombies in the usual ways. That is a bite will do. Keep in mind this is a musical so the zombies have to be the slow walking kind. Very slow walking. Thinking “Walking Dead” but in slow motion. Still the filmmakers will kill off the teen age actors in gory fashion. But not too gory. Still “R” rated gore but “PG” rated songs.
Speaking of the songs, they were written by Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly and they are good ones although I don’t think I’ve ever heard them before. Ella Hunt is a fine singer so she gets most of the leads. She’s also a pretty good actor and has some real stage presence. I also liked Sarah Swire’s performance. The rest, OK. This is nothing too serious although there is personal loss that comes into play. I had a good time overall.

It sounds like it shouldn't work, it sounds like it's trying to be too much all at once. But rejoice! This film is an absolute blast. They managed to find a great balance between over the top comedy gags which involved zombie body parts, and intimate character moments packed full of emotion. I haven't seen enough musicals to say they I don't like the genre but I never really rush to see musicals. This, however, surprisingly worked great as a musical and pretty much all of the songs were pretty catchy, well performed and nice to listen to. Sure, there were a couple of songs which I could've done without but you can't have it all. The practical affects with the zombies were done very well and looked incredibly realistic.
This probably won't be everyone's cup of tea and I can see why some people may not like it but this is something that I can definitely watch again and it's clear that a lot of passion and love went into making this film as good as it could be.
