Little Anna fell in love with ballet after watching a performance with her mother. At the age of just nine years old, she auditioned for the famous Imperial Ballet! But…she was rejected.
The set-back didn’t stop Anna—she auditioned again a year later and was accepted into the company. Although ballet was her passion, it didn’t always come easily to her, and she worked fiercely to become the best.
After her training was complete, she performed across Russia and later formed her own company with which she toured the world. The story of Anna Pavlova, one of the greatest dancers to have ever lived, teaches us that with hard work, our talents can take us wherever we want to go.
This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the star’s life.

About the author

¡Hola! My name is Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and I’m a writer and creative director from Barcelona. When I was a little girl, I used to read books under the covers with a flashlight once my mom had turned the light off. I always wanted to be a writer… but when I grew up, I ended up in advertising. It was a lot of fun though; I loved working with directors, photographers, designers, and I also wrote scripts, documentaries and texts for all kind of things.
Then, I decided to self-publish a book that had been in my mind for a long time. One day, one thousand copies of the book arrived at my home – I had no idea what I was going to do with them! I opened a little online shop, offered them to some pretty stores in my neighborhood and, one by one, I sold them all. Soon, publishing houses started to approach me to write books, but I was working on another idea of my own: a series about little people with BIG dreams.

I have to admit that when I went through it, I felt it was one of the weaker entries in the series, but I am giving it a 4 star because the 5-year-old enjoyed it way more than I had expected. She did say that the art didn't quite fit (in her opinion), but she still liked the story about Anna. She liked that her mother had to work hard so it made sense that Anna would also work hard to be a ballerina. She appreciated that and was able to relate to it.
Since this book was for her, I'm going with her rating, and she says it is a 4 star. Her only criticism was the artwork but otherwise, it was a solid read and she enjoyed learning about Anna Pavlova.
As with many of the Little People, Big Dreams series books, the subject overcomes adversity and challenges to become successful and, often, famous. This is true here where Anna Pavlova was poor and was made fun of due to her body not being characteristic of a typical dancer's body. Her fellow students called her "Little Savage." But she overcame the obstacles n her life and became very famous.
Anna Pavlova used her good fortune to help others. She helped Russian children who were orphaned in the war find new families, and she opened a school for young aspiring dancers.
I am always most pleased when the subject of these books goes on to use their fame to help others. Despite the art not matching the subject matter, in my opinion, that is, I still think that this is another great book in the series and recommend it.
Review of: Anna Pavlova (Volume 85) (Little People, BIG DREAMS, 91)
I liked how the book focused on Anna Pavlova working hard and later using her fame to help others. It was unexpectedly very inspiring. The art is simplistic, and stylized, but pleasant. Overall, a good buy.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
The book gives a sense of the challenges she faced, such as growing up in a single-parent household and experiencing bullying at dance school, and it shows how she triumphed in spite of her difficulties, enjoyed a wonderful career, and went on to mentor many other dancers around the world, spreading ballet to other cultures and incorporating multicultural elements into European ballet.
The blocky, unnatural-looking illustrations are the reason why I'm not rating this book higher. The human figures have distorted bodies and faces, and their hair frequently stretches back behind them in extended, blocky shapes. Although the illustrations in this series are usually somewhat abstract and have flat color schemes, these pictures are visually skewed and unattractive. I would find them unappealing in any biography, but it is especially unfortunate that this illustrator handled the book about Pavlova, since the illustrations absolutely do not convey the artistry and elegance of ballet.
The story is written in short and easy to read and comprehend paragraphs... one on each page. It's the perfect amount of text for a young reader, such as my 5-year-old, or a bedtime story. The illustrations are bold, artistic, and fun. The story is thorough enough, and not boring. There is a more encyclopedia-like biography on the last two pages of the book.
All in all... another great book in the series.
