'Iconic is an overused word, but it feels apt when describing the globally recognisable, influential, and compelling images of photographer Annie Leibovitz. Now, in a luxurious new compendium, her last decade of work is showcased in all its glory... The book is a who's who of the relevant and revered.' – Red
'A true trailblazer.' – Glamour
'Formidable in its breadth, and its weight... This is Leibovitz in excelsis: movie and music stars, politicians and power brokers; the inevitable nudes - Lady Gaga splayed over a bed, and a rather simian Jeff Koons admiring himself in a mirror; as well as a panoply of less familiar characters and still-lifes from her Pilgrimage series of objects and places with historical resonance. It is a record not only of Leibovitz's life as a photographer over 11 years, but of American life... In her new book, the Hollywood glitz gives way to more contemplative pictures of artists, painters and musicians.' – Daily Telegraph Magazine
'These portraits are acts of collaboration. She and her subject are telling us stories.' – Herald
'Breathtaking... Leibovitz has produced compelling images that are a subtle combination of staged and relaxed.' – The Lady
'The extraordinary work of one of the most celebrated celebrity photographer of all time... Uniquely captivating photos.' – Parade

'Witty, personal and always unique, Leibovitz has a career of capturing iconic people... A majestic who's who of the last decade.' – The Essential Journal
'Not only are the photos in Leibovitz's book of portraits stupendous among themselves but so is the book itself. It is no exaggeration to say that the finest portrait photographer of our time is all of that because she is a wise artist first and a photographer second.' – Buffalo News
'She does what painters once did: creates a stunning public image for the great and celebrated.' – The Spectator
'For those not familiar with Annie Leibovitz, she has probably photographed every well-known person in the world. These range from those well known in certain circles, such as myself, to the extremely famous. She made her mark with Rolling Stone magazine, and later Vanity Fair. Once I was privileged enough to be photographed by her - in New York's Central Park at 8 o'clock one morning with some pigeons on my head! She was so organised; she had a pigeon trainer, an Airstream, 500 coloured balloons, three bicycles, four vintage cameras and, just in case, a wardrobe for 40 people - all Paul Smith of course. It worked out really well. When we were asked if we could support the launch of her new book, which covers her work from 2005 to 2016, obviously we were really pleased as it just fits in exactly with what a lot of my customers like. It was a big privilege. What she's so clever at is making people relaxed and chatting away, and then just capturing the moment. There are a lot of portrait photographers out there, but she just has that way of catching a yawn, or a sleepy or doleful eye. She's just good at what she does.' – Paul Smith, TheWeek.co.uk
'Masterly... Leibovitz's latest 'revelations' are of the caliber one would only expect from a woman the Library of Congress named a 'living legend'.' – The New York Times Book Review
'Leibovitz has shot the great, good and no-so-good in the world of music, movies, politics and business... Yet it's the more intimate and straightforward portraits that have the most enduring appeal... The masterful lighting, framing and visual fireworks remind us of why she is such a legend.' – Amateur Photographer
'... Collects the last 11 years of Leibovitz's unmistakable portraits.' – New York Magazine
'Annie Leibovitz's photographs have captured some of the most influential people of our time. See through her eyes in this collection of portraits depicting Kanye West, Queen Elizabeth, and more.' – Elle
'There's no doubt the collection of photographs in Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005-2016 is gorgeous.' – POPSUGAR
'An essential collection.' – Vanity Fair Online

I don't think there has ever been another photographer that has had more access to famous people than Annie Leibovitz. In fact, being photographed by Leibovitz is one of the true signs that one has reached the upper echelon in regards to fame. I'm a professional architectural photographer and I often think about how amazing it would be to be able to spend a couple days just looking through Leibovitz's archives. For ever picture we have seen from Leibovitz, I guarantee there are 20-30+ that we haven't seen and given how long she has been working as a photographer on top of all the amazing people she has shot....well, her complete archives must be one of the most impressive archives in the entire history of portrait photography, after all, she started working for Rolling Stone Magazine in 1970 so were coming up on close to 50 years that Leibovitz has been shooting high proflie people.
As for this book, Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005-2016, its one of my favorite books to date by Leibovitz. Her skills at personalizing her subjects never ceases to amaze me. Many of her pictures are more akin to a story than a regular photograph. This book really focuses on the people who were most prominent during the years of 2005-2016 and best of all, there is quite a bit of unpublished work in this book. That is one of my favorite aspects to art books in general, the inclusion of new unpublished work. While its nice seeing many of the really famous images shot by particular photographers, I also want to see work that I havent seen before. I wish all photography books, or art books in general, had a section for unpublished work or work that hasn't been seen yet. Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005-2016 is the follow-up to her two books, Annie Leibovitz: Photographs, 1970-1990 and A Photographer's Life, 1990-2005, and in this regard is succeeds with flying colors. If your a big fan of Leibovitz, you should own all 3 of those books. They really show the progression of her skills, how she has changed over the years, and also how some aspects of her style have remained unchanged through the years. Personally, I would love to see them combine all 3 books into a single publication, something like you see with Taschen's XXL series of books. Even tho I already own all 3 book individually, I would jump at the chance to own all 3 in a single extra large format book.
Bottom line - if your a fan of Annie Leibovitz then you should already have a pretty good idea of what to expect with this book, famous people being photographed in beautiful locations and intricately set up studio shots. Again, many of her studio shots are more akin to a movie set than a photography studio. Thats the level of design and detail that she goes to with many of her shots and I personally love the contrast between artists like Annie Leibovitz and Irving Penn. While both were absolute masters at shooting portraiture, thier methods and ultimately the final pictures they shot couldn't be more different in many aspects. They really are like polar opposites in many aspects and yet with other aspects they are almost identical. For example, their both masters of lighting and have an uncanny ability to bring out the personalites of the people they were shooting. One thing is for sure and that is that both Penn and Leibovitz are 2 of the greatest portrait photographers to ever pick up a camera and that will never change. Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005-2016 is just a brilliant book, one that continues to prove that Leibovitz is still at the top of her game and still has plenty to offer in the world of photographic portraiture. A must buy for both Annie Leibovitz fans and serious art book collectors alike.
5 stars!!
Wish I had a chance to work with you or myself for such amazing projects and meet you someday.
With respect, Maxim Dupliy - photographer.
makes for fascinating photos of well-known people usually depicted in conventional postures.
