The Story of Annie's
In 1989, Annie Withey co-founded Annie’s and started making natural macaroni and cheese. She wanted to show that a successful business could be socially responsible. The values that Annie started with still guide our company every day.
We are on a mission to make Organic for Everybunny. When you eat organic food, you are caring not only for your family’s health and wellness, but that of the planet and everybody on it. Together, we are making an impact.
Supporting the health of people and the planet begins with sourcing ingredients from organic and sustainable farms. The health of each is connected to the health of all. We’re all in this together.
We choose ingredients that are not only delicious, but also have a positive impact on farmers, communities, animals, the environment, and you.
Introduced back in 1989, Annie’s Shells & White Cheddar is our original and best selling product. Annie created Shells & Cheddar (as we call it here) in her kitchen when she realized there was no all-natural, white cheddar macaroni & cheese on the market. She came up with a totally delicious product that is made with real white cheddar cheese and organic shell shaped pasta.

Brand Story: In 1989, Annie Withey co-founded Annie’s Homegrown with the goal of giving families healthy and delicious foods and to show by example that a successful business can also be socially responsible. Annie chose Bernie, her pet rabbit, to be the brand’s “Rabbit of Approval.” She put her address and phone number on the original boxes to encourage consumers to connect with her. Today, we continue to value direct and honest communication with our consumers. Our Products: We sell premium products made from high-quality natural and organic ingredients at affordable prices. Our products appeal to health-conscious consumers who seek to avoid the artificial flavors, synthetic colors and preservatives used in many conventional packaged foods. ORGANIC PASTA (ORGANIC WHEAT FLOUR), DRIED CHEDDAR CHEESE (CULTURED PASTEURIZED MILK, SALT, NON-ANIMAL ENZYMES), WHEY, BUTTER, NONFAT MILK, SALT, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, SILICON DIOXIDE (FOR ANTICAKING).
Annie's Way in 10 Minutes BOIL: 6 cups water in a medium saucepan. STIR IN: pasta, bring to boil. Cook 8-10 minutes, or until done, stirring occasionally. DRAIN PASTA: in colander. While pasta is draining… ADD: 3 Tbsp lowfat milk to the warm saucepan. (OPTIONAL: Add 2 Tbsp unsalted butter for richer flavor) SPRINKLE: cheese over milk; stir to combine. ADD: cooked pasta back to saucepan and stir well. ENJOY! Annie’s Suggestions: For a RICHER flavor, add 2 Tbsp unsalted butter. For a CREAMY, TANGY version, replace milk with ½ cup lowfat yogurt.

The boxes didn't come in the large purple box as shown in the image, but rather a shrink-wrapped pack of 12. I noticed there was a little bit of cheese powder inside the shrink wrap. That should have tipped me off. The first time I made mac and cheese from the boxes I purchased on Amazon, I pulled out three boxes for a playdate. Of the three I opened, one had a defective seal on the cheese packet. I thought that was the reason why there was powder inside the packaging and figured the rest of the boxes would be good. I was wrong. Today I went to make macaroni and cheese for my family again, and I had to open three boxes before I found one where the cheese packet was sealed. So of the first six I opened, three were defective. After discovering this, I decided to open the last 6 boxes to see if any others had broken seals. FIVE of the six had broken seals! That means that 8 out of the 12, TWO-THIRDS, were unusable. This is unacceptable!
Unfortunately, because I had boxes purchased from the store that needed to be used up, I didn't use the mac and cheese from my Amazon order right away, and it's past the return window. Even so, how can you return something when you've already opened it?
All in all, I am very disappointed with the quality of this product. I'm concerned that Annie's quality is going downhill.
I'm giving this 2 stars because we enjoyed the boxes that were not defective.
I used to LOVE the original version, before they were bought out around 2 years ago, before they starting changing recipes (this recipe within the last month or so), before this cheese sauce contained whatever seems to be making it FLUORESCENT (HINT: It's not Turmeric for color!)
Cook the noodles as directed, strain and set aside. In the now empty pot on medium heat, melt a patty of butter (I don’t measure, but it’s a bit under a tablespoon).
Sprinkle just enough flour to coat the surface of the melted butter. I have one of those blue cylinders of Wonder quick-mix flour for ease of access, but a dash of regular white flour will do.
Mix with a rubber spatula and dash on a little milk. When it thickens, add a tiny bit more milk. When it thickens again add a third splash of milk, remove heat, and mix in the cheese packet and some ground black pepper or other seasoning (oregano is also good, or Franks if you want buffalo Mac).
Sometimes I will also mix fresh spinach or cooked sweet peas in for a bit of green, but the general idea is this adds almost no time and no extra dishes and gets you a thicker, more awesome version of Annie’s.
The shell variety cradles just enough of the saucy cheesy goodness that it makes for a delicious bowl of mac.
Try it if you haven’t already.
It’s also fabulous with add ins like:
Chopped steamed broccoli
Chopped steamed asparagus
Chopped bacon or ham
Buttery bread crumbs on top and bake until browned
Add a can or more of Tuna or Albacore (packed in water and drained) for a punch of protein

It's American so I'm sure its full of some unnamed chemical death additives but I'd say its worth it on occasion.
Obesity here I come!
It's a great product otherwise and if it had been the product as advertised, would have given a 5 star for quality and taste, and especially for the value!
