History of Annie's Homegrown
After creating Smartfood in 1982, one of the fastest-selling snack food products in U.S. history, Annie Withey co-founded Annie's Homegrown in 1989 with the idea of making a great-tasting, all-natural macaroni and cheese. In the end, though, she did a lot more than that.
In 1998, Annie's Homegrown was the first to develop and introduce three amazing kinds of organic macaroni and cheese. At the end of 2001, Annie's introduced a line of certified organic pasta, dressed up in a lovely bright purple box. And in 2005, Annie's introduced three flavors of Deluxe Mac and Cheese, four awesome flavors of organic crackers that they call Cheddar Bunnies, and three flavors of graham crackers called Bunny Grahams, made with organic ingredients.
Annie continues to be the inspirational leader of Annie's. She works from her home in Connecticut, answering some consumer letters and providing input on new product and marketing ideas. She remains the company's corporate conscience.

Flavor: Alfredo Shells & Cheddar | Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 12)
Contains Milk and Wheat ingredients.
Made on shared equipment that also processes Egg and Soy.
Organic Durum Semolina Pasta (Organic Semolina, Water), Organic Cheddar Cheese (Organic Cultured Pasteurized Milk, Salt, Enzymes), Whey, Salt, Garlic, Spice.
Easy to cook in 10 minutes. Boil 6 cups of water in a medium saucepan. Stir in pasta, bring to a boil again. Cook at medium boil 8-10 minutes or until done. Drain in colander, While draining pasta, add 2 tbsp butter and 1/4 cup lowfat milk (Use organic) to saucepan to melt. Add cheese powder and stir to mix. Return pasta to pan and mix well. Light preparation: Prepare as above, but eliminate butter.

Result = wholesome joy.
It is a quality product but it isn't suited to my taste buds. I am surprised because I prefer brown rice and wild rice to white rice and generally enjoy whole wheat products. But to this eater, the whole wheat shells were too heavy and chewy. The watery white cheddar sauce enhanced the pasta's rougher texture and blandness. (The white cheddar sauce is like an alfredo, and less creamy than Annie's regular cheddar.) My friends love this stuff, but I think it's an acquired tasted. If I had known what I know now, I'd have stuck with the enriched white (yet stripped of it's nutrients) shells or at least gone with the regular cheddar sauce.
While still not a full-on fan, I enjoying this product more now that:
1. Tastes much better when cooked 10-11 minutes at sea-level (the box recommends 8-10), the texture is less rough and gummy and is more noodle-y.
2. Adding fresh herbs with the cheese sauce. It gives a depth to the flavor. My favorite herb to add (so far) is cilantro (add about 1/3 cup chopped after mixing in the cheese sauce). Other enjoyable variations were adding 2/3 cup of Italian parsley or 1/8 cup fresh dill leaves.
