Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until in May 1817 she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on July 18, 1817. As a girl Jane Austen wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were only published after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma(1816). Two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818 with a biographical notice by her brother, Henry Austen, the first formal announcement of her authorship. Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16. She also left two earlier compositions, a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and an unfinished novel, The Watsons. At the time of her death, she was working on a new novel, Sanditon, a fragmentary draft of which survives.

Excellent background for truly understanding Jane Austen

This book does three major things: it provides an up-to-date rendering of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice using all known material, going back to the original publication as much as possible; it provides an easily accessible explanation for most of the things that need explaining in the book on opposing pages (glossary, customs, history, carriage descriptions, and so on); and it provides insight into the book. I did find this last objective the weakest: while Shapard has made a noble attempt to integrate the massive amount of Austen criticism, there simply isn't room to do justice to what Jane Austen "really meant" along with all the other explanations. Sometimes these comments seem just superficial and slightly patronizing, in fact, which would mesh well with Northanger Abbey in tone :) but lose something when confronted with the awful majesty of Mr. Darcy. I would pay a lot more money for a larger book that integrated much more criticism and analysis in a truly annotated version of the book; alternatively, a well-constructed web site would be fabulous if hard to market. More illustrations would be very welcome as well! The novel's chronology is excellent and well-explained. The bibliography is massive and truly the most useful bibliography I've seen if you want to do research into the life and times and customs of Regency England or Jane Austen's world. I'd like to thank Dr. Shapard for this book and ask, when does Emma or S&S come out?

This was a very good annotated edition although I have to agree with another reviewer in that there were quite a lot of repetitious words. After one description of town as London I don't need it repeated every other paragraph. Also there seemed to be a high obsession with the time-line which included a chronology and an appended note on the time-line involved. I don't care how many weeks or days are going by and I'm assuming neither did Miss Jane Austen or she would have been more detailed. I'm always too busy falling in love (time after time) with Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. The illustrations were a nice plus as well being as some things are hard to picture. In the next annotated Austen (which I'm dearly hoping to be Sense and Sensibility or Northanger Abbey, author take note! Annotate these two often overlooked Austen novels and I'll be the first in line!) I would like to see a little less redundant notes. It was very annoying following the notation expecting something interesting only to be told (yet again) what countenance meant or what time afternoon was. That was the only reason it got four stars instead of five. Other than that well done!

It allows the reader to fully understand the snallest details of the novel that would otherwise be missed due to changes in the meaning of many words as well as the mannerisms and social structure of that time. If you have read Pride and Prejudice before and enjoyed it, you are in for a special treat. You will be amazed at how much more you will get from it by reading the annotations along with the novel. The layout is exceptional because the annotations are on the page opposite the corresponding page of the novel--no referring to the back of the book. The annotations flow with the novel. It is an exceptional work which I very highly recommend. A++++++++++

Well, evidently it's the ONLY annotated P&P, and the discussion of the form and implications of the various vehicles, normal income levels and shifts in English meaning since 1813 are useful. That said, if you haven't read P&P, read another edition first as the Shapard gives away plot developments. You may also need a slightly thick skin as he soberly informs us that domestics are servants and that a farthing is a coin of little value. His style is more reminiscent of Mr. Collins than of Jane Austen, but there is useful material for all that.

I have read Pride and Prejudice at least six times in print, including the print edition of this book. For my most recent re-read, I started with the free Kindle edition, but was put off by the many typos, so I thought that I would just buy the Kindle edition of The Annotated Pride and Prejudice. Unfortunately, this book ALSO had many off-putting typos. I guess that for books that were originally published in the pre-ebook era the process of conversion to Kindle involves scanning with an OCR reader, which would be fine if someone actually went back and proofed the result. That obviously did not happen here. Since I'm re-reading the entire opus this summer (done with Emma and P&P, on to Northanger Abbey), I'd be very interested if anyone could point me at a high-quality set of Jane Austen books that I could read on Kindle. I haven't found any, yet.
