Mia is a successful author. Her life changes when a stalker starts emailing her. The stalker scares her when he sends photos of Mia and her young daughter. Mia reaches out to DI Gravel for help.
Even though we knew who the stalker was early on I didn’t think it took away from the story. In fact in this book it added so much. It kinda made me hold my breaths in parts.
Although Grav wasn’t a main character in this story I really enjoyed it. I found it was a fast paced and gripping read.
Ive read each of this authors books and I’ve got to say his writing is outstanding. He certainly knows how to captivate his readers. I read this in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. I’m just gonna change the ending in my head lol
I highly recommend this story.
One of my favorite detective series!
Mia just loves receiving fan mail. But the message from her number one fan was far from the kind she’s accustomed to. This guy is flat-out creepy...his messages becoming dark and ominous! The demands he begin making are outlandish! With threats of both she and her daughters’ life looming, she reaches out to an old family friend, Detective Inspector Gravel.
Still on leave from his department, Grav is dealing with problems in his own life. His humiliating departure from the force has left him broken and reeling.
Overweight, drinking everything in sight, his exercise routine consisting of stumbling from the couch to the fridge for another beer.
Can he pull himself together long enough to help save his dear friend Mia?
Though this is book 4 of the very popular series, it can stand squarely on its own. So you can jump in at this point and not feel like you’ve missed anything.
John Nicholl has created the most brash, unlikable character in DI Gravel. Yet you just can’t help but love this troubled good guy. I found myself rooting for him throughout, and would’ve actually enjoyed seeing more of him in this one.
The book continuously builds in intensity throughout and results in one fantastic shocker of an ending!
I would heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys a good dark and gritty thriller.
Thank you to John Nicholl for an ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
As always with John Nicholl’s inspired psychological thrillers, the killer is hidden from his potential victims in plain sight of readers. Powerless, they can only watch as “His” actions escalate until they rule Mia’s life and threaten her daughter, Isabella. Even their flight to Mia’s parents’ Italian villa leads to tragic failure; “He” is there.
DCI Gravel, affectionately known as Grav, facing a choice of retirement or a desk job, becomes involved when Mia appeals to him as a family friend. How far will he go to help her when his own daughter, Emily, receives a horrific gift from the killer
by John Nicholl. Having read all of John Nicholl’s novels, I can honestly say he has done it again…another powerful psychological thriller! His novels never disappoint, and keep getting better.
The novels in the DI Gravel Series include:
Portraits of the Dead (DI Gravel, #1)
Before I Met Him (DI Gravel, #2)
A Cold Cold Heart (DI Gravel, #3)
Anonymity (DI Gravel, #4)
In Anonymity, Mia Hamilton, a successful novelist and a cancer survivor, is targeted by an internet stalker, and her life with her four-year-old daughter, Isabella becomes a nightmare.
Early on, the reader is aware who the stalker is…but it does not take away from the plot, but instead heightens the suspense levels.
Unaware that the predatory psychopath has placed cameras in her home, the stalker sends untraceable emails, including photos of her and her four-year-old daughter, demanding Mia performs outlandish tasks, threatening dire consequences if she refuses or approaches the police.
The last email received her attention:
“I know where you live. Tell me you love me, Mia. I’m your number one fan.”
Mia tried to turn her attention to focus on her next novel, but the effort was futile. She just wanted to be left alone. He was getting to her, and she started to resort to alcohol and pills for comfort, to erase his existence.
This stalker was watching her, and threatened her if she went to the police. He was a lunatic!
“Stalking is a crime of control.”
Mia then turns to a family friend, DI Gareth Gravel, (Grav) currently on medical leave for help. Gravel, overweight and hooked on booze and cigars, whose life is empty after the loss of his wife to cancer, needs to return to work to survive. When his own daughter is threatened, it makes his decision very clear. He must catch this monster!
A game of cat and mouse where one wrong move can have dire consequences. This is one novel that you will not forget too readily, a gripping plot and well-written characters…and one that I highly recommend!
Many thanks to the author, Bloodhound Books via Netgalley for my digital copy.
