Editorial Reviews

Anorgasmia probes the life of someone who lacks erotic desire.

Cris, an experimental novelist and professor, has never known sexual ecstasy or even sensual longing. Mark, a band teacher and would-be jazz musician, spent 30 years in emotional isolation, continuing to love a girl who rejected him when they were 18. Then Cris returned to Mark and they unraveled their lives in order to be together, discovering time and distance had never eroded their deep companionship. They should be in a glow of daily bliss, but Cris has found that returning to her closest friend did not solve her sexual problems or body loathing....

Cris’s search for what’s wrong has led her to questions about her gender and sexual identity.

“When I was 12, I didn’t want to be sexualized, and maintaining masculine androgyny was a way I thought to continue to avoid it.”

Feeling mostly disgust about her body, Cris looks back to her pre-adolescence, a time she could “pass” for a boy and enjoyed doing so. At the same time, she knows she feels no sexual desire for women, and cares for Mark so deeply she wants him to have all the sexual experiences he fantasized about during their 30 years of separation. The dissonance in these emotions causes Chris to embark on a transgender experiment, while her deep emotional intimacy with Mark causes her to expect him to share the journey.

As Cris moves closer to trying a transition, Mark’s ability to lean on his feelings for her to ease the stress of making a whole new life in his 50s starts to fall apart. Cris is buying men’s clothes and underwear, getting her hair cut, using words like binders and packers, genderless and asexuality. Will her desire to experiment with gender identity be too much new distress for Mark’s unconditional, so-far inexhaustible and for so long unrequited love? Will Cris’s explorations of gender identity and asexuality allow her to find joy and serenity in a life that includes deep love but not sexual fulfillment?
