I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Another Brush Stroke is the first book in The Carnal Exhibitions series by LW Barefoot. Be warned though this book is dark and twisted.

Harper has been through hell. Seen the devil himself and survived. Now a famous artist she lives in terror of The Sculptor with her best friend Jamie. Jamie is Harper's best friend since they survived foster care together and he along with her dog Rufus. Jamie having landed his dream job is having a celebration, from the moment Harper and Evans eyes meet she is instantly drawn to him. Ashamed of her body and mentally damaged byThe Sculptor can Harper open her heart to Evan.

Evan Hawthorne is a serious mysterious business man who is attracted to Harper the second he lays eyes on her. He must have her. All of her. Evan though likes to inflict pain and has never met his match in a partner. He sees something in Harper that instantly makes him know she's perfect for him. Evan though carries around secrets. Big life altering secrets but has sworn to protect Harper. They say there is a fine line between pleasure and pain, but Evan hopes to help Harper heal. Can he get Harper to trust him enough to let him in?

Can I just take a minute and say holy freaking wow!!!! This book blew me away. I devoured it in a day. I'm now left with many questions and my mind swirling in a million different directions. I think my brain actually hurts from thinking and trying to fortune this book out. The twist and turns will have you on e edge of your seat and you definitely will not want to out it down. This is a hard review to write because I'm terrified I will say something I shouldn't and ruin it.

He didn’t strike me or beat me like his previous victims. But he ripped out my soul and devoured it like the devil himself.

WOW!!!! When I read the synopsis for this book, I immediately wanted to read it. NEEDED to read it. It sounded interesting, different, and intense. It’s all those things and so much more!!

This must be what it’s like to stare at the devil himself. He doesn’t look like a monster at all.

The start of the book is dark, very dark, and as the story develops it sucks you in and doesn’t let you leave. You’re locked on this intense ride that will leave you wanting to ride again. After finishing it, I want more. This is book one of the series, and I am hungry for the next book, also it ends with a cliffhanger of note!!

“I’ll follow you into the dark, my love, I swear I will com after you.”

Harper is broken, shattered and haunted. Her past has left her with scars, not only physical, but mental as well. She’s been in the shadows, hidden, scared, and untrusting. Until a pair of green eyes locks in on her and won’t let go.

“I swear I’m trying to be a gentleman, but the things I want to do to you have nothing to do with being gentle.”

Evan is a man of means. He is rich and will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and what he wants is the beautiful artist, Harper. He’s tall, dark, and handsome and Harper finds herself being pulled into his darkest desires.

“Leave the fighting to me, little one. I’ll fight through even your darkest and worst nightmares to save you.”

There is no denying the fire between them. These characters drag you into their world, you feel the agony, pain, angst and desire coming at you. LW definitely plays with your emotions, and it is in the best way possible.

This book is dark, but so addictive! I can’t wait to start book two!

I liked many parts of this book, but there were also times I didn't like it. Specifically, times when I hated Evan and when Harper annoyed the crap out of me!

This book brings to life what happens after shows like criminal minds or Law and Order SVU end. What happens to the victims after they escape from the torture and abuse. I liked the beginning of the book....seeing how Harper coped (or didn't) with what happened to her, with her memories and how she viewed the rest of the world. I liked that Evan gave her space and didn't question her. Jamie seemed like the best guy in the world especially for sticking by her side (although their back story isn't very clear).

At times I thought Evan was a real dick. I get the control and pain that occurred between Evan and Harper in the bedroom. It actually made sense that Harper needed to feel the pain to stay grounded in the moment. I think I would have liked to see at least a couple less controlling scenes, but those didn't bother me. It was when Evan took the control outside of the bedroom; there were times he treated her no better than the man who tortured her for days at a time. In fact, I swear there was a time I thought he was the sculptor himself given the way he treated her. This went beyond a Dom/Sub total power exchange arrangement or even a master/slave relationship. At least in those arrangements the Dom/Master would respect the sub/slave. I didn't feel the respect from Evan especially towards the middle of this book.

Harper I liked a lot, although at times I was annoyed. She willingly went with Evan wherever he demanded often without questioning. I felt like as a victim she would have wanted more information or more control over her life than she had.
