This product is obviously geared towards people who have no cooking training whatsoever. You can pre cook your vegetables and meats if you like in freezer bags or vacuum sealed bags in a pot of boiling water and then transfer them to a grill or stove top pan, or the oven. Honestly, in my opinion, your adding additional steps to the cooking process which inevitably robs foods of texture and taste.
I can certainly see how large restaurants may use the large commercial Sous Vide cookers to thaw and partially cook meats before cooking them completely on the grill, but they’re catering to a large clientele that fluctuates in volumes and it becomes difficult for them to leave meat out at room temperature for obvious reasons.
They advertise that this is a great time saver but that just isn’t true. You can cook every single meat, poultry, fish or vegetables in less time and it will have more flavor and texture with the desired tenderness if you simply know how to cook them. It’s not rocket science, just take some classes. They’re often just one evening for a few hours and are offered by numerous retailers of culinary supplies and even fine grocers.
If your thinking about purchasing one of these for yourself or a friend, purchase an introductory culinary class instead, you’ll get so much more out of that than you will with a gimmick.

Since it’s New Years Day tomorrow, I will have to wait until Thursday to see if I can get any customer service. If not, the unit is going back.
In addition the built in controls and display is easy to use and fairly intuitive. Once paired with a cellphone, you'll automatically get an alert once water heats up and cook time starts, even if you initiate the process via the precision cooker.
Personally this is the biggest advantage the Anova has over the Joule. 80% of the time I'm making the same recipes that I already know the temp/cook time for, and it's much simpler to plop the Anova into the pot and directly set everything, than to have to pull out my phone, unlock it, go to the app, wait for it to connect, and then set.

Returned devices twice for service. Customer service at Anova does an okay job, but it did not resolve issues.
First issue was for noise - Far louder than the Joule (that I just bought) or the Sansaire (which fell off a counter alas). Second issue was Wifi - just could not pair it with my Ipad.
They don't allow you to use multiple devices to pair - even though they insist on setting up an account. The app won't work on an Ipad in landscape mode, etc.
Save yourself headaches if you use Apple mobile devices and buy the Joule.
