This would be a five star review, if not for the fact that the mount breaks very easily (see photo).

I have bought three of these now -- two for myself, so that I can sous vide simultaneously at different temperatures, and one for my brother. I love this thing. It has dramatically improved my cooking experience. So many things become so much easier and have better outcomes. For example, all fish. Before I got this, I basically wouldn't cook fish, not because I dislike fish, but because I dislike imperfectly cooked fish. Now I cook fish all the time, and it's always perfect. Truly the only serious problem is that the mount breaks. I've had my first one for two months, and the mount is badly damaged (the photographed mount is from the first one I bought). I've had the second one for just over a month, and after just three weeks, its mount was already badly cracked (not photographed). Please fix this, Anova! The core problem is that the two screws can too easily be over-tightened, and the plastic mount is not sufficiently strong to handle reasonable levels of tightening.

As far as the product goes with respect to it being an appliance, it works quite well. However the reason that I bought this particular device over competing brands was the Bluetooth capability.

Turns out their recent app update kills this feature. Unless you don't mind forking over your private details such as your Facebook account to use the app.

Don't bother with this device when there are competing brands that don't demand to know your social network to use it.

I love the cooker, but part of what they charge for is the Wi-Fi / bluetooth connectivity to the app. Apparently the app updated on my phone, and now for some reason (I *REALLY* have no idea what the reason would be) I have to log in with Anova in order to use it. What??!!! I have an account on their website, and I have LastPass on both my computer and my phone, so it happily filled in everything. Bzzzz. No dice. App tells me over and over that the email and/or password are wrong. After getting really, really frustrated, I decided to try to create a NEW account on the app. That worked! So this is stupid for multiple reasons:
1) They have accounts with their web site, but it apparently has nothing to do with the login on the app. Why???
2) Like I said, why in the world do I need to log in to the stupid app just to use my cooker????

Now, since I have a Password saver on both my phone and my windows machine, it will forever try and help me login and fail. I suppose I'll have to manually log in to the stupid app every time I use it. Honestly, if I knew they were going to do this I would NOT have gotten this cooker.

I grill very good steak... or so I thought until I purchased this. A couple of hours in the hot water bath and a quick cast iron sear and you'll be having the most amazing steak you've ever eaten. The bluetooth needs to keep re-connecting and takes about 10 seconds which is annoying - I just walk back to the kitchen which is not a big deal. The bluetooth connectivity and the app could be a lot better which is why I am taking a star away.

Technology aside, the actual product cooks food very well. I use a freezer zip-loc bag and it does the trick. Remember to have the butcher cut you a thicker slice 2-2.5".

This cooks the best steaks. Forget all those other bake-in-the-oven and then pan fry posts you've read on FB. First use sous-vide, then sear it for a minute or less on your very hot outdoor grill.

However, the bluetooth implementation and app leave a lot to be desired. First, setting the timer manually on the device is a nuisance. Here are the instructions direct from Anova support:

1. Hold down the play button for 6 seconds (the temperature will then switch from F to C or vice versa). Keep holding the play button for 4 more seconds.
2. Then, you will see a timer icon appear on the screen. At this point you can move your finger from the play button to the timer icon, press and hold for 3 more seconds.
3. Next, a series of zeroes will appear on the screen.
4. Set the time by scrolling the wheel up or down.
5. After you have reached your desired time, press the timer button again and time will automatically start counting down.

They claim you should use the app. However, instructions for using the app say to press a non-existent "manual" button. After pressing lots of buttons, I found the right one: An up carat on the left side of the "Now Cooking" bar.

Finally, I had used it several times when all of a sudden it insisted I log on to use it. Except apparently I had no account. So I had to create the account, the password was of sufficient security to use for my financial accounts (mandatory mix of upper and lower case letters and a non-numeric/alphanumeric (such as an asterisk). Then I had to go to my regular e-mail and verify the account. All of this on my phone while trying to get dinner going! Get some real software human factors engineers in there, Anova!

Been using the device for several months now and can't imagine cooking steak without it. Everyone who enjoys a good steak should own this. I don't use the bluetooth functionality because it's a complete gimmick (all cooking devices that offer it are). I work in IT and just want to push a button and have a perfect steak, using the bluetooth apparently requires jumping through a lot of hoops according to other reviews. In fact I read reviews saying that updating the device forces you to use bluetooth so I avoided all that. I just unboxed it and plugged it in to power and started cooking away. Without using the bluetooth you can control the unit directly so no worries there. Without bluetooth it does exactly what I want it to do.

I'll never got back to cooking steaks the traditional way.

Anova updated the app to require creating an account, even for the Bluetooth-only model. The app is the only way to control some settings, such as temperature display and calibration. Extremely disappointing that they feel entitled to break a product you paid for long after you bought it.

This has quickly become my favorite kitchen tool...

I bought it, kind of on a whim, because I have been reading a lot of blog and forum posts about them. It seemed like an interesting way to cook, and it seemed that most users were getting great results, with a little bit of effort.

It has been here less than a week, and we've used it about a dozen times already. The first thing I did was make hard 'boiled' eggs- Although they technically aren't boiled because they never get that hot! Following the directions in the app, they came out PERFECT.

Next was Chicken breasts... One hour of cooking, again, following the instructions in the app, and we had the most perfect chicken breast i've ever cooked. They really take on the flavor of whatever herbs you choose to cook them with, which is important to me since I have to use minimal sodium due to dietary constraints, so I have to make food flavorful in other ways.

I poached eggs with it- I LOVE poached eggs, but hate making them. This machine made it almost too easy.

BUT- The best thing yet, and something that makes the machine entirely worth it to me- is Shrimp. I LOVE shrimp- and the shrimp made with this is beyond description. It is absolutely perfectly cooked. Following the directions, I cooked it for 30 minutes at 135, and the result is, well- I have no words. It was SO good I had to go back to get more shrimp, and we had it again this evening. I may change to an all shrimp diet in the near future. It's that good.

Oh- The steaks. Yeah- We did those, too. NY Strips, cooked medium rare. They were also excellent! I cooked them per the directions in the app, then gave them a quick sear in a cast iron pan, and the result was one of the best steaks I've ever had, and certainly the best steak i've ever cooked.

I would buy this machine again in a heartbeat!

Amazing! We've just entered the world of sous vide cooking, and have used this more than most of our other kitchen tools lately. I'm proud to admit that I used to fail at making any decent cut of meat, and now can cook a meat to the perfect "done-ness." My husband has had so much fun trying new recipes, and new finishing techniques. TIP: Be sure to do some research on how to finish your meat. Once it's up to temperature, it looks a little bit unappetizing. However, if you dry it off with papertowels, let it sit for a couple of minutes (let the temperature drop a little bit), and then slap it on a smoking hot cast iron (or whatever you have) pan, it forms an amazing sear, and keeps the delicate meat inside. This is easily our favorite kitchen tool!

There is nothing better in the world than a well marbled, 2 inch cut, medium rare rib-eye grilled to perfection on my trusty Weber. As a new father, I found because of the prep and attention required, my love for grilling was put on the back burner. And rightfully so. I purchased the Anova sous vide in hopes I could just "set it and forget it" while I give my kiddo a bath, read some books, etc... I was skeptical, as grilling a medium rare stake requires more finesse than just plopping some meat in some water for 1-4 hours (doesn't really matter). Also, cooking meat in water is essentially against everything I find good and holy. Anyway, I gave it a try, and it was easily one of the better steaks I have ever made which is saying something considering I seared it on a cast iron and not over an open flame, it was also not a rib-eye but a filet mignon... It was so tender and perfectly cooked. I was floored! I will say, if you're looking for fast and convenient, this is not for you. It's incredibly convenient, but it does take some time. You can walk away however; even go grocery shopping, wash your car, etc... Also, you're going to need a hot flame or an incredibly hot cast iron to get a thick char without affecting the doneness of the meat. Trial and error I suppose. Anywho, super excited about this product! It makes something that takes years of practice look like child's play. Excellent product!
