The short summary is the wifi doesn’t work and Anova support has a horrible. Both in response time and quality of actions. Finally gave up after the second machine also didn’t work. Stick with the Nano or the regular machine. Don’t waste your money on a Pro.
A more detailed explanation follows:
When I received the item the product looked awesome but when I tried to connect it my phone that’s when the trouble started. At first it connected quickly and then asked to do an update. Logically that’s the thing to do. Once that completed nothing worked. I tried everything. I first got this in December so I went to Anova’s website to see what support options there were. Well what a joke. The site literally said the app doesn’t support the machine but an update was forth coming but you can join the beta. Ironically I was on the beta and the beta site and it was closed because the production app had already been released.
This set the tone for the rest of my “support experience.” I tried calling the support number numerous times. No answer. Leave a voice mail. I think that in and of itself is bad but hey it’s the holiday season. So I thought I’d try the “support” chat. Now that is what is truly a joke as quite literally the responses to the chats were DAYS APART! I’d be given instruction that literally don’t work. Such as how to reset the firmware. The the more obvious and basic commands like delete the app, restart the phone, reboot your router. I went so far that I tried with two different model of iPhones on different iOS versions, an iPad and even an Android phone. Nothing worked. Mind you each response and next step would take at least 24 hours or longer. Finally they admitted defeat and said return it. I mentioned politely that they may want to update their site to reflect the app has been published and maybe offer some support options and things to try.
Well Amazon , as awesome as they are, quickly sent out a replacement. A couple of weeks go by (as I was frustrated). Then I finally opened the replacement. EXACT SAME ISSUE. Connect the app, update the firmware and cannot connect to the wifi. This time I go to the website and it has a plethora of things to try such as: disable the 5ghz wifi, bring the device 5 feet from the router, reboot, reset. Each and everyone dutifully tried and failed. I pull out my old Anova (which the tech suggest I delete from my phone and account in the previous support engagement) and get it connected in about a minute. Just like the instructions said.
This leads me to surmise there are a few potential issues. 1. The firmware/technology on the Pro is very different (which seams weird if the fundamental functionality is the same just beefed up components.) 2. The second machine is bad too or 3. It’s a got poorly designed software, app, or firmware that just doesn’t work.
Regardless after the previous round of support was so painful (also only open 8-5 Eastern) I’m no longer wasting any more time. Quick call to Amazon’s support. Return complete and I’m cooking my next Steak with a Joule.
Highly recommend avoiding this machine.
Some notes about me: I love steak. I love grilling. I love smoking a brisket. I have a Big Green Egg and a Rec-Tec pellet grill, and I use them both regularly. When I make a brisket it’s an event – seriously, people have driven 140 miles one way to get some (I don’t do anything unusual, I just use fresh seasonings and good beef to start with). My steak technique in cast iron on the stove top are equally applauded.
I’m also tech savvy... I created work on an original Macintosh in 1984, have built over a dozen PCs and a few more Hackintoshes, hacked my WiFi early 2000s to provide a bridged network (now called a mesh), and I run my personal website on AWS. I’m known as a problem-solver... before I retired, I was called the “switch whisperer” because I could figure things out and make them work.
I mention all this because I can’t make this thing work. Can’t figure it out. There is a serious disconnect between the hardware and software providers here... likely because of a poor sourcing strategy. I expected as much with the 50% fire sale, but I thought I might be able to solve the problems.
I was wrong.
It’s beautifully crafted and mechanically wonderful... and it eventually does find its target temperature and holds it. The device I received was also exceptionally quiet (I used it in an All-Clad large stew pot stainless steel with an aluminum core). The device was perfectly fine when I first set it up.
But then I downloaded the app and chose to upgrade the firmware, thinking that the issues reported here must have been fixed by now.
The firmware update rendered the device almost useless. You can fiddle for awhile and get what you want, but it is maddening... the buttons don’t respond unless they magically decide to wake up and do what you ask. And forget about WiFi... really, just forget about it. I wish I could reset this thing to the starting point, but I can’t. It was responsive and perfect before I upgraded the firmware (as prompted by the app).
I love the build and performance... it feels like a quality device, and it seems like I can use it that way. But I wish I had never upgraded the firmware – the promise of a WiFi enabled sous vide cookpot is frankly stupid to begin with, and their firmware update almost ruins the basic operation.
A final note: if you’re at all like me and you like the art of cooking meat — that distinct difference you get every time depending on the wood you use, whether you include smoke, the time on each side — the distinct cut of meat and what it means at the table... you do not need sous vide.
I think the whole process takes the fire out of the food... it brings great potential to blandness. Milquetoast.
Learn to cook your meat on an open flame or at least coals and you will never cook another way again.

Tried troubleshooting on their help forum, but didn’t get anything useful out of it.
The sous vide they sent me should have never passed quality assurance. The cooker had a mechanical rattling noise, and flaky touchscreen. Half the buttons worked intermittently, some not at all. The unit itself didn't look like a new unit. The heating elements were dirty, the retaining screw was missing some of the black finish leading me to think they sent me a refurbished unit (instead of a new one).
I have been a customer of Anova since the first preorder years ago, and this experience has soured me a lot. I ordered another unit, and returned the one they sent me.
I won't buy it a third time. Get it right this time guys... Buying it on sale is no excuse to send me junk.
